Having been bound by the first thing that came to hand by Belinda, the watchful store detective, Alex bowed his head in shame as watching shoppers pointed and giggled.
“Can’t you put me somewhere out of sight, ma’am?” the captured shoplifter asked desperately.
“Maybe later,” Belinda replied airily, “after all, some of these good folks might want some pics for their social media accounts.”
“What?!” an appalled Alex nearly shrieked.
“Well,” continued the female detective in the same musing tone, “I always think public humiliation has a greater deterrent effect than a fine - don’t you, sir?”
Alex looked round frantically, but the phones were already in the watching crowd’s hands…
