Description
With the publication of Nemo's proposed origin story, a great many things have come to light. Under pressure from the UN, the Croatian government - which effectively absorbed the now-defunct kingdom of Hetvia after WWI - has released a number of records from their archives pertaining to Hetvian history in the 19th century. All of them seem to corroborate the story.
The story begins in 1855, with the attempted uprising of the Baron Falon, who intended to take the throne of Hetvia in a coup. His main strategy to raise backers was to play off the nobility's fears of social disruption in the wake of local upheavals. The Petrovic-Njego's family's rise to power in neighboring Montenegro, the Hungarian revolution of 1848, and even the stirrings of what would become the Taiping Rebellion were all reasons cited by Falon to depose the king. In his work to find new allies, Falon approached a powerful potential one who had remained neutral: Count Andre Dakkar, who ruled a Hetvian settlement on a small Mediterranean island officially named "Mysterious Island". On Dakkar's paradise, class and social distinction were reduced to being effectively nonexistent. A scientist at heart, Dakkar worked with his sister Sonia and her fiance, engineer Nicolai Roget, to create something incredible: a pair of "diving boats", which were completed shortly after Baron Falon arrived. Dakkar intended to use them to prove a theory of his regarding the existence of a society of undersea fish-men. When Falon asked Dakkar for help, the count turned him down flat. Dakkar was uninterested in politics, only using his position as a noble to fund his scientific pursuits. However, Falon was immensely interested in Dakkar's new creations, seeing them as potential engines of war and conquest. His attempt to take the information from Dakkar by force ended in catastrophe for everyone. While Falon conquered Mysterious Island with his elite cavalry unit, both submarines were crippled in separate incidents, sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Dakkar, Roget, and Dakkar's men were trapped in Diving Boat No. 1, and Sophia, Falon, and Falon's men were in Diving Boat No. 2. Both vessels sank into depths beyond which they were meant to go, but while No. 1's engine room completely caved in, No. 2 suffered only a damaged air compressor.
Upon reaching the sea floor, they were confronted by the aquatic people. As they attempted to hammer their way into the diving boat, an enormous reptilian creature rose out of the darkness and attacked them. Over 20 meters long, the beast pursued the sea-people into their green, shining caverns. The diving boat fired a pair of torpedoes at the beast, which killed it on the spot. As the astonished undersea people filed out to stare at their ancient enemy's corpse, Dakkar, Roget, and the others left Diving Boat No. 1 to meet with them, where the aquatic men knelt before them in utter reverence. Things got awkward when Diving Boat No. 2, which had been falling behind them all this time, came down to land next to the first one...
Reality check: this is a creature from the 1929 version of "Mysterious Island". I do not own the rights, etc, etc...
