This is a very original depiction of a well-known mythic figure infamous for monstrousness. It has become something of a cliche to depict the monstrous feminine as alluring femme fatale but this uses a minimalist approach to reinvigorate that aspect of the mythic figure whose gaze meant death by petrification. I can imagine the frozen look of the victims of this creature to be a disturbingly ambiguous combination of horror and wonder. What makes it work is the simple palette whose colors connote cold, ice, stone, grante, death, and mystery. Many have located her terrible power not so much in her horrid hair of writhing snakes but in her eyes. The obscuration of her eyes draws the viewer to where they should be. Any good booby trap provokes curiousity not suspicion. With the allure of the nude figure and the tiny, appealing lips and the come hither gesture regardless of the steely claws, this is a creature whose doom attracts rather than repels. It is mythic!

I've been sitting with this in my inbox for the last few days looking at it with the intention of writing you a critique and not knowing where to start.

But that's a good thing, because what's caused my hesitation is how very strong this image is.

This is a piece that works for me on a very visceral level, I've always preferred illustration//suggestion over rendering/documentation and I think you've blurred the line here beautifully. The figure is well positioned and realistically proportioned, these are taken from the documentation side of the arts. This documentative (I may have made that word up but it seems to fit) foundation really allows the power of your brushstrokes and line work to shine through. The minimal palette and strong use of lines makes the image very strong on a graphical level and draws the eye in. These, combined with the final ambiguity of your figure and the title of the work create a truly compelling package.

what is art? perfectly realistic renditions of humans and landscapes? or anything done with something that can leave a mark on a surface? "Medusa" is a perfect example of art that many people take for granted. i see art. i see some of the greatest art i have seen in a long time. i am not a good artist. therefore my word does not mean much. but i can not leave this without leaving my thoughts. your attention to detail is unparalleled to all but nature herself. lips to be seen in a seemingly blank faceless head. the finest folds of the body seen in the figure. the attention to the hair that wisps and curls in silver strands of smoke across the portrait. these eyeless yet stair at the viewer with an air of confidence or maybe cold malice. what more can i say besides simply "i love this"

I really love this piece. Love the hand especially. I would say that i'd like to see her face, but the way you've painted it really goes along with her story. Who wants to look Medusa in her eyes, right? haha. Those colors were a great choice. Typically someone might choose something to give her a more 'serpent-like' air, like greens and reds and golds with scales and such, but I like her better this way. It makes me think 'cold blooded' and sad. She looks soft and lonely, very touchable yet utterly unobtainable. A wonderfully new rendition of an ancient tale. This is just wonderful. I can't even explain it well. It's haunting and simple yet complicated in all its implications. I'd put this on my wall happily.

Beautiful piece. It stopped me as I was reviewing your gallery. Wonderful lighting and use of a very selective color palette.
