Description
I made this roster as a blend of my own personal wishes with some realistic expectations, or at least as realistic with the current evidence. I wanted to merge the recent and popular with a little bit of the older and obscure as one of my beliefs for Super Smash Bros. is that it should be a showcase of Nintendo’s history and not just what is new and hip. While I am including popular characters on my roster, it is not the only deciding factor.
I probably should bring up the rumors about Nintendo porting Super Smash Bros. for Wii U with all the DLC characters to the Nintendo Switch. The key word here is “rumor”. Me personally, I want an actual new Super Smash Bros game. I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t want just a “Game of the Year” version of the Wii U game. I mean, Mario Kart is one thing, but with Super Smash Bros., I expect to see a little more progress. Therefore, I made this new roster with the concept of a new entry in the Smash Bros series in mind.
Before anyone states that I have too many or too less of characters from a certain series, keep in mind that it is not a set-in-stone fact. As Smash for 3DS and Wii U has shown with the overabundance of Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus characters and lack of new Donkey Kong Country and Zelda characters, there is no rule that states “This series deserves x amount of characters”. Whether or not you think that series like Star Fox, EarthBound, or Xenoblade deserves more characters is just an opinion. After all, we are not the ones making the game.
Characters I added:
For the new Mario representatives, I first chose Toad since he’s the most obvious choice. He has been the most commonly recurring character in the Mario games. Toad is long overdue to be a playable character in Super Smash Bros. With Smash 4 I thought it was kind of a cop-out to choose Rosalina over Toad, especially he was prominently featured as one of the main playable characters in Super Mario 3D World. Yes, Rosalina was playable in that game too, but that wasn’t until after the final boss fight. As a side note: I’m making Toadette an alternate skin for Toad as a minor bonus.
Thinking of second Mario rep was kind of difficult to me. At first I considered Geno, but as I said, I was trying to think as realistically as possible. I was kind of reluctant to add Paper Mario because of how I didn’t like two versions of Mario in the roster already. That and the recent Paper Mario games haven’t been well received. However, I would be okay with it as long as he has a completely different moveset and fighting style like Sheik and Zero Suit Samus.
Dixie Kong and King K. Rool I think are pretty obvious as new Donkey Kong Country reps. After Donkey Kong and Diddy, Dixie makes the most sense as a new protagonist character. She was a main character in two of the original DKC games and a prominent character in DKC Tropical Freeze. K. Rool is the most recurring bad guy in the DCK games. Even if he wasn’t in any recent games, it doesn’t overrule the fact that he’s the most recognizable villain of the series.
Picking a character from the Zelda series is kind of opinion-based. Some believe that Impa would be the most obvious. Impa would be fine, although I think it might be a little hard to differentiate her from Sheik, not that it’s impossible of course. Personally, I would like to vouge for Tetra and Midna. Both are very well-liked characters in the Zelda games and I believe both can offer something unique as Smash Bros fighters.
Ridley needs to be in the roster now. He is the only other noteworthy character in the Metroid series besides Samus who is deserving for Smash Bros. And no, he is not too big. His size is irrelevant in a non-canon crossover fighting game. That “too big” argument is so baseless that it’s hardly worth bringing up anymore. If Olimar isn’t too small, Ridley isn’t too big. No more lame excuses!
I added Takamaru from The Mysterious Murasame Castle, but I have decided to keep him separate from the retro characters since his future is a little unclear for the moment. Despite having only one game, Nintendo has expressed interest in the character with numerous cameos throughout the years. There was even an attraction based on his game in Nintendo Land in the form of Takamaru's Ninja Castle. Hideki Kamiya of Platinum Games expressed interest in reviving his series if Nintendo would allow it. There are plenty of people in the industry who have high regard with the character. Even though his game wasn't as popular as the likes of Mario or Zelda, Takamaru has remained visible for quite a long time.
Krystal is the next new Star Fox rep in my roster. She is the last Star Fox character besides Wolf who I think deserves a spot on the roster. Her not being in any recent games shouldn’t matter, as is hasn’t stopped other characters before. It certainly hasn’t stopped fans from demanding Nintendo to bring her back to the Star Fox series, let alone to Super Smash Bros. Platinum games did mention in a Tweet that even though she wasn’t in Star Fox Zero, they would definitely bring her back if they were to make another Star Fox game.
I also put Wolf back in as a returning veteran. I didn’t like how he was dropped from the roster in Smash 4. It made it look like that Sakurai was giving the Star Fox series the shaft by dropping him and not adding another character from the series to compensate. Of course, I’m not suggesting they should bring Wolf back exactly the way he was in Brawl. In fact, I would prefer it if they changed his Final Smash and at least one of his special moves (mainly his down B).
I’m leaving one Fire Emblem slot blank for now until details for Fire Emblem on the Nintendo Switch comes are revealed. When the new entry comes out for the Switch, I will give priority to the protagonist of that game, whoever they may be.
For the first new Pokémon rep, I added Gengar. There are a couple reasons why I added Gengar. The first is that I didn’t want to just rely on the recent Pokémon Generation for new characters. While I do think that it is important to represent the recent generation in Smash Bros., it shouldn’t hold back other long-time Pokémon from making it in the roster. It certainly didn’t stop Charizard from coming back. The Second is that Gengar is still a very popular Pokémon that is well-known among all the generations.
I added Decidueye since he seems to be more widely popular 7th Generation Pokemon at the moment. He does have the best design out of all the final evolved forms of the 7th gen starters and already looks like that he’s perfectly suited for Super Smash Bros. With Charizard and Greninja in the roster, Decidueye could complete that Grass/Fire/Water starter triangle. One thing that I should bring up is that the 8th Pokemon Generation could possibly be out by the time the next Smash Bros is released. It would be kind of disappointing, but if it does happen, they may have to give priority to that generation. But for now, I’m keeping Decidueye in the roster.
Elma is in my roster as the first new rep for Xenoblade Chronicles. She is the best character to represent Xenoblade Chronicles X in my opinion. I considered Cross, the player avatar from that game, but he/she was too much of a blank slate. Unlike Robin and Corrin in Fire Emblem who were also avatars but actually had speaking roles and character development, Cross’s speech was limited to enemy battles and multiple choice dialog boxes and was more like an observer character. Elma on the other hand is the more interesting character as she had a more active role and overall made more progress as a character.
Update March 2018: Also from the Xenoblade series, I’m adding Rex and Pyra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. My idea with the way they operate is that the player mainly controls Rex who performs the standard attacks and three of the specials while Pyra follows and performs the Blade Arts as one of the special moves as the Blade Special Gauge charges (a character mechanic unique to them). Unlike the Ice Climbers, Rex is the one who takes the hits and Pyra automatically teleports to Rex's side if she strays too far or falls off the stage. So basically, they operate the same way they do in XC2. I'm also adding Mythra as an option in place of Pyra through the custom moves. I figured it would be okay to add two new XC spots since XCX isn't even that old. There's no rule saying that only the most recent game needs to be represented, otherwise Toon Link wouldn't have been in Brawl. - End Update
For a new IP to be represented in Smash Bros., I believe the Inklings from Splatoon are the most obvious. It makes the most sense especially with a second game coming out on the Switch.
I added Ninten from EarthBound Beginnings to complete the trilogy of Mother characters in the roster. I am aware that he is probably the least popular character on my roster, but that doesn’t matter. As I mentioned, one of the main points of Smash Bros is to present Nintendo’s history which includes what’s old and new and not just some “popularity contest”. And no, he should not be an alternate skin for Ness. By doing that, it gives the impression that whoever made the decision either hasn’t played EarthBound Beginnings, hasn’t done the research, or just doesn’t care. With his game released worldwide back in 2015, he now has more of a reason to join the roster. I could go on about my reasoning for Ninten, but this description is already long enough.
I put the Ice Climbers back in, seeing as how there may not be a handheld sister version with limited technical specs to keep them out of the roster (as far as we know at least).
The Excitebiker is my choice for the next “Surprise Retro” character, among Mr. Game and Watch, R.O.B., and Duck Hunt. Admittedly, after the Duck Hunt Dog there’s not many obvious choices for the Surprise Retro characters without getting too predictable or desperate in a worst case scenario. I chose the Excitebiker because I thought he at least made the most sense for this specific category of characters.
I’m adding Shantae as the new third-party rep. I remember her being very popular during Smash Bros Fighter Ballot. In this case, it’s safe to assume that she has a fair shot.
With the third-party characters, I’m trying to keep a limit on them. This is mainly because of the business side of things. Having this many third party characters could be expensive enough already. Also, having an overabundance of third-party characters may detract the whole point of Super Smash Bros being a showcase of Nintendo’s history. And no, they will never drop that notion (let’s be real here).
I’m also adding the Mii Mage as a new option for the Mii Fighters, in which the Mii would have a moveset and attacks centered around magic.
Characters I dropped:
I’m making Dr. Mario a custom skin for Mario, as he was originally planned in Smash 4. I found kind of pointless to make Dr. Mario a separate character when the differences were so minuscule. When they did it with Sheik and ZS Samus it made sense because both of them were programmed with completely different movesets from Zelda and Samus respectively. But with Dr. Mario, it’s like if they made Wario in his traditional outfit a separate character from Wario in his Wario Ware outfit but only change one move. Also, because I added Paper Maio, three Marios on the roster is just redundant. However, I do understand that Dr. Mario has some advantages over Mario. So here’s my idea: make Dr. Mario an alternate skin for Mario, give some of the advantages of Dr. Mario’s A attacks to Mario, and make the Mario Tornado a custom move for Mario’s down B options. This way, Mario alone can have the better of both worlds.
Lucina is out leaving Robin as the sole rep for Fire Emblem: Awakening. There were several reasons for this. It isn’t just because she’s another clone of Marth with barely noticeable differences, but mainly because I personally see Robin as more of the main protagonist more than any other character in Awakening. As some of you may know the main plot of Awakening was very heavily focused on him and the decisions that he made as a character. I have different justifications for each series that I’m representing. For the Fire Emblem reps, I’m limiting it to one character per FE game.
I dropped Dark Pit since he was never a necessity to begin with. He is clearly a carbon copy of Pit with minor to no differences and his Final Smash is just copy-pasted from Zelda. I don’t know many people who like him either. Plus, there’s the fact that Dr. Mario, Lucina, and Dark Pit were all added to the roster as afterthoughts since they were originally planned to be alternate skins anyways.
Update 6/3/2018: My stance on representing 3rd party characters has changed a little bit since I posted this roster last year. I'm still keeping them to a minimum for the same reasons that I've mentioned before. However, if there are additions of more than one character from the same 3rd party company, I will be okay with it as long as it's not overdone. - End Update
Other notes:
Yoshi is still classified as his own separate series, even though he’s in the middle of the Mario characters like in Smash for Wii U.
I'm adding the other Pikmin protagonists as alternate skins to Olimar, in a similar fashion to the Seven Koopalings to Bowser Jr.
Because of Platinum Game’s partnership with Nintendo, I’m keeping Bayonetta separate from the third party characters. That and Nintendo was the one who picked up Bayonetta 2 after Sega dropped it.
I also moved the custom character button down there so that the custom window doesn’t have to pop up to those who want to use the default option.
Update 5/26/2018: When I posted this roster last year, I was originally planning to replace the Wii Fit Trainer with whoever was revealed in a trailer and wasn't in this roster, but under the current circumstances, I won't be hasty.
Last March it was announced that Smash for Switch would release this year. It is clear to me that more characters will be revealed at this year's E3. Considering that the game is slated to release later this year, I don't see the point of updating this specific roster if even more characters will be revealed until then. If I do make any changes for this roster, it will be for whoever the protagonist of Fire Emblem on the Switch will be. If I decide to make any more changes beyond that, I would just post a separate roster. - End Update
