i wouldn't finish the background, it looks god this way, if you made one i feel it would take away or be distracting

First off, I think it's awesome. I like just the way it is. However, if you want to loose that "cartoony" look you spoke of, you need to make a more subtle approach to the colors & values, specifically, the hard, dark outlines. That's the biggest mistake most people make when trying to capture a photo realistic look.
Nevertheless, still think she looks cute as a button!

Well..I need the lines that I always start with, and just use a colored pencil instead of just grey
