Description
The leaf litter crunched and crumbled underfoot as Wirnpa led the way through the trees, pausing occasionally to sniff the air and take in her surroundings. It had been some time since she’d been here last, and she hadn’t really spent very long here the first time either. She stopped once more to glance around, deciding which way to go from here. She had to ignore the quiet, impatient sigh that came from the young worg behind her. Though she’d grown since the last time Wirnpa had seen her she was still little more than a pup, and Wirnpa reminded herself to be patient where Illuka could not.
“I hear running water.” Wirnpa said, breaking the peaceful silence. “Why don’t you go ahead with Jynx and see if you can find it? We could use a break.”
“Sure.” Illuka replied, trying to sound uninterested, but her wagging tail gave her away as she bounded ahead through the trees, calling back for Jynx to follow her. The small feline wove once through Wirnpa’s leg’s affectionately before she too ran off, racing to catch up to the energetic pup. Jynx didn’t speak the same tongue as Wirnpa or the worgs, but she seemed to understand just fine and odd as it was, she made a good companion.
After taking some time to re-orient herself, Wirnpa picked up the pace and followed after Illuka, having little trouble tracking the path of turned of leaves and broken stems that marked the path she’d run. Shaking her head in amusement she made a note to herself to give the young one some tips on stealth. She had started learning her hunting skills by now, and though Wirnpa knew Worgs often used different hunting techniques to those of her own kind she figured a bit of friendly advice couldn’t hurt. Not today though. Today they had a mission, and she would be looking after Illuka long enough to focus on that another day.
She located the pair near a small stream, the clear water gurgling and bubbling its way between moss covered rocks. Illuka was attempting to snatch small fish from the shallows, the water dripping from her head a sure sign she’d already made quite a few attempts that had failed. Jynx lay nearby, well away from the waters edge and resting on top of a large, flat rock in a patch of sun.
“I don’t think you’re going to catch much like that.” Wirnpa suggested with an affectionate chuckle. Illuka looked a little ridiculous with the fur on her head soaked and dripping but the rest of her still dry and rather fluffy. “I can teach you another time.”
“Can you?” Illuka asked happily, bouncing away from her spot to join Wirnpa, who stopped at the waters edge for a quick drink before turned away and continued on her path, having figured out which way they needed to go.
“If you’d like. It’s hard, but once you get the hang of it it’s not too bad. And they are quite tasty.”
Jynx reluctantly abandoned her spot in the sun and ran after them as they moved away from the stream, jumping up to rest on Wirnpa’s back. Her small paws felt funny as she walked up her spine to curl up, a warm little bundle, in the spot behind her shoulders.
“That would be good. Adoni doesn’t like fishing much. I bet he’d be really impressed if I came home and caught us a bunch of fish!”
Wirnpa though Adoni would probably be less impressed and more concerned that the young pup could drown on her own, but she didn’t mention that to the young pup. “Better wait until you’ve actually learned to fish before you think that far ahead.” She teased gently. “Come on now, we’re almost there.”
“What are we looking for again?” Illuka asked curiously, her muzzle scrunched up a little with her confused look.
“A special treasure.” This part of the forest was particularly thick, the underbrush much too dense for them to traverse easily, so Wirnpa led them around to find a clearer path as she explained. “I met another saber while I was in the settlement, her name is Abyss and her and her human have a special ship, a big thing made of wood that floats on the water. They use it to travel.” Jynx shifted on her back, and she wondered if the small feline was listening and understood.
“Her and her human are looking for special items, interesting things from the past and specials treasures.” Illuka, who hadn’t been overly interested in their journey before, now seemed excited to reach their destination, her pace getting faster as she listened to Wirnpa explain. “I want to find what they’re looking for and bring it back them.” She smiled as in the distance, through the trees, she spotted their destination.
“Look.” She purred, nudging Illuka to get her attention ahead. Though the trees still blocked most of their view, part of an ancient, crumbling stone structure could be seen between the tick trunks of the trees. “It’s an old human settlement, a loner showed it to me many seasons ago, though I didn’t think to look around back then.” She lifted a shoulder to encourage Jynx to jump down and walk again, which she did with a bit of encouragement, trotting between the two of them with her tail head high. “We might just find the treasure we’re looking for in there, or at least something interesting.”
