Description Cillian Murphy's life began on May 25th, 1976 (30) in Douglas, Cork, Ireland. He is the first of four children to his father, a school inspector, and his mother, a French teacher. Cillian attended the Presentation Brothers College, Cork, and later studied law at University College Cork (UCC). Initially, his performance interests lied in music, and he played in a Frank Zappa-inspired band called Sons of Mr. Greengenes. During his years in high school and college, he also began acting as a way to kill time. While in his fourh year of studying law, he signed up for a workshop with Corcadorca's Pat Tiernan, and soon got the lead as Pig in Disco Pigs (which he later reprised that role for the 2001 feature film version by Kirsten Sheridan). As he toured with the production of Disco Pigs, he realized that pursuing a career in law was not in the cards for him, and he left school.
Cillian After being cast in a series of complex theatre roles, he landed a part in The Tale of Sweety Barrett in 1998, his feature film debut, followed by the coming-of-age dramedy Sunburn. Though his talents translated well into film, he continued to partake in theatre productions for the "rush" that the live performances provided. Even so, he continued to take parts in film, such as 2000's On the Edge, in which he portrayed a suicidal mental patient in Ireland; hoping to bring light to the problem of suicide and poor mental health among young Irish men. After gathering several more films under his belt, he had become a well know rising star across the world, except for in the US. When cast in 2002's 28 Days Later, as leading man Jim, the American viewers began to take notice, and along with them, the bigger movie studios. As he strived to maintain the balance between stage and screen, his growing worldwide popularity began to overwhelm his time for the theatre, and he began accepting roles in larger films such as Girl with a Pearl Earring, Intermission, and Cold Mountain in 2003.
After taking a year off in 2004, to marry his longtime girlfriend Yvonne McGuinness and begin a family (his son Malachy was born December 4, 2005), he began filming for Batman Begins. Cillian won rave reviews in Batman Begins, in which he portrayed the villain Dr. Jonathan Crane (AKA 'Scarecrow'. Also in 2005, he filmed Wes Craven's thriller Red Eye, cast as terrorist Jackson Rippner, as well as Breakfast on Pluto - in which he played Patrick "Kitten" Braden, a transvestite prostitute, for which he received outstanding reviews. Additionally, he was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor in Musical or Comedy for this movie. 2006 brought Cillian into the roles as Damien in The Wind That Shakes the Barley, as well as his second pairing with 28 Days Later director, Danny Boyle, for Sunshine, and Lucy Liu for Watching the Detectives.
