Description
Batman drove fast towards the Batcave. As he drove J'onn appeared next to him in the passenger seat. Besides shape shifting, becoming disembodied and moving through solid objects was another ability of the Manhunter.
“What's up J'onn? How's Tank.”
“He is weak and unconcious, but should be fine if Julia can repair him. But there is dire news from Justice Hall.”
Batman turned and scowled. “What's wrong.”
“I just got a call from Triumph, William, and apparently Scorn showed up at Justice Hall as Wonder Woman.”
“You warned them, didn't you?” Batman asked, somewhat alarmed.
“Of course, but she was clever and able to convince outside security she was Diana. Triumph said there was a brief battle with her and two large mechs. She got to the hangar bay and stole Diana's jet.”
“Oh No.” Batman said. “Casualties?”
“Three guards dead and five injured. Triumph was able to save himself and the rest with his electromagnetic force fields, but could not stop Scorn or the mechs. Their new upgrades, as we have seen, are resistant to EMPs. This is very sad Bruce, they were good people.”
“We need to get back and get Tank in working order. He could be a key in stopping Scorn.”
“How so?” J'onn asked.
“He was able to take out Diana and myself with his energy pulses. So maybe he can take out Scorn too while we provide a distraction.”
“Can he be trusted to go along with this?”
“I think you'll have to be the judge of that.” Bruce said. “When Tank is up to snuff, I'll talk with him with you and Julia and see if we can count on him to help us against Scorn. I wont promise him the Joker, but I can promise him leniency and maybe a future role in your Justice League or something.”
“Indeed. And my role shall be to make sure he's not lying.” J'onn said
“You're our best lie detector, so make sure he's on the up and up.”
“I will. What do you think Scorn is up to?” J'onn asked.
“I'm not sure, but I have a working idea. I'll explain when we're all together.”
At that point they were arriving at the cave and Bruce took the truck in through the secret entrance.
Robin, Arrow and Canary had caught up and were right behind them. Robin had the Batcycle and Arrow and Canary shared their own motorcycle.
Once inside, Tank was unloaded and his mechanical parts put in one area and his body and life support taken to the cave's infirmary where Alfred and Julia waited. J'onn took care of the heavy lifting and Julia made sure Tank would be comfortable.
Meanwhile Batman called everyone to the conference room. Which was really just an open space because he never held conferences here except with Robin, Alfred and occasionally J'onn or Kal El.
There were no hidden identities here. Everyone knew everyone and who they were in the “real” world.
Oliver had his hood pushed back and had removed his mask as did Sara. Jason was there unmasked as well, rubbing his sore shoulder. They all stood in a circle in the dimly lit cave and all eyes turned to Bruce, who had also removed his cowl.
“J'onn's brought some bad news. Scorn stole Diana's jet and I fear her plan is to go to Themyscira.”
Jason spoke up. “Themyscira? Why would she want to face an army of Amazons?”
“I don't know yet, but the only reason to want the jet is to get Themyscira's location and to take it there. I need more information, so before the trail goes too cold, we need to find that lab ASAP. Any luck with the tracking device on Stealth?”
“No Sir.” Alfred chimed in. “It seems she may have detected it. It has been motionless just outside the city since the end of the confrontation.”
“Dammit.” Bruce exclaimed. “Any other leads or possibilities?”
“Well sir,” Alfred continued. “I have been looking at three possible sites of promise, but I need more time to sort through the information.”
Sara asked, “What about Tank? How much information do you think he knows?” And she turned to Julia. “You've worked with this crazy bot for awhile. What has she ever said?”
Julia blushed then replied, “Well, anything she said about Wonder Woman was how it was her fault for being scarred in the first place. This is the first I've heard about her wanting any invisible jet. I thought that was made up.” She started feeling defensive. “I mean I never, ever heard her mention any Amazons or Themyscira. I'm sorry. Believe me, I'm happy to tell you anything I know.”
“I'm sorry Julia, I didn't mean to acuse you, but you might know something you don't realize could help. Say...did she ever mention a special interest outside of work stuff, or a place she liked to visit...maybe Hobbies?
“Uhhh. Well...She never really said much outside of work talk and theories and her own great concepts and ideas. But now that you mention visits. One time in three years, she took a vacation, but it was near the beginning of when I started with her. She said she was going to a Greek style Villa in the Florida Everglades of all places. I really never thought anything about it because most bosses take plenty of odd vacations. As time passed, I just kinda forgot about it. I came to know her as a workaholic. It's not like she needed much sleep. Ya know the cybernetics don't need sleep, just the brain and any other living tissue, which wasn't much in her.”
Oliver encouraged her. “Did she say she was going to meet anyone or go with friends?”
Julia thought. “No. But she did say she'd be able to “just be herself for a few days”, which is pretty normal sounding until you understand the source of that statement. Hunh.” Julia's gaze looked distant. “I guess that means that where ever she was going, they knew what she was. I was still having issues accepting it myself at that stage. I'm sorry, you were right. Does that mean she knows someone in the Everglades who knows about her?”
All went silent as everyone in the room tried to consider what that would mean, But doing a random search in a place like the Everglades would take longer than the time they had.
Bruce spoke up first. “Well, it seems you have uncovered a lead and a new puzzle. This is good.”
J'onn added. “I will see who I can get from Justice Hall and maybe have them start digging up anything anomalous in that region and investigate from a nearby distance.”
“Excellent. Intelligence only, no going in without notifying us first.” Bruce said.
“Agreed.” J'onn replied.
Bruce turned to looked around and turned to Alfred. “Okay. Alfred, pass what you've got to Jason, Ollie and Sara. I need you with J'onn and Julia and getting Tank back to healthy. When you're done briefing them, meet us back in the infirmary.”
“Good idea sir.”
Alfred led the three to the main computer room while Bruce, J'onn and Julia went to the infirmary to check on Tank.
As they walked, Bruce considered what Scorn might be up to. Something about “the villa in the Everglades” revelation reminded him of a story Diana had told him a long while ago. That story suddenly created an itching at the back of his mind. He could not ignore an itch like that.
