That particular species of Hornbill is about the size of a Bantam chicken . Some species are much smaller and some much bigger So the different species range from 4oz to around 8 pounds.Β

These birds have strange breeding habits. When the female is ready to lay eggs , they find an empty woodpeckers nest in a tree. The female goes inside and the male builds a mud barricade over the front of the hole, leaving a gap just big enough to feed her through. She then plucks out most of her feathers to make a warm , soft nest for the eggs. A few weeks after the chicks hatch , and her feathers have re-grown the male will break down the barricade and let the female out. He then rebuilds the barricade , with a feeding hole, and the chicks remain there until they are big enough to fly . The male then breaks down the barricade again to release the young birds.Β
I suppose the beak is required for all that !!
