Description Hey you! Feel free to download this to your computer, but don't use it anywhere on the internet without my permission, or you'll have me, my watchers, and my online buds to deal with. Don't be an art thief!

More TS giftart! This is Freya, Cricket's Friesian mare who has been utterly lovely and supportive of my poor Khepri who was a bit of a wreck after the events of

Of course, being a classic black Friesian, like Evanescence, she had always been in Evanescence's shadow in Khepri's eyes. However, he's beginning to see her for who she really is, and their relationship is becoming much stronger and healthier than his rather dysfunctional rapport with Evanescence.

Khep still has some pretty deep-seated emotional constipation, but Freya has made it her personal mission to teach him how to love. -sniffle- My not-so-little womanizer is growing up! xD

So this is the lovely Freya, looking suitably patient and serene. She's easily the most rational mare in the herd. I tried something different with the mane to make it wavy. It took forever! So many hairs. I guess I'll stop rambling now.

I love encouragement and suggestions for improvement, and I respond to all comments. ^.^

Thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. I'm flattered that you like it so much!

I use Adobe Photoshop CS4, with a small Wacom Bamboo tablet for hair. I have a walkthrough of my pre-tablet technique here: [link] .

Gimp 2.6
the cheapie of the photomanipulation world.

Gimp still has the Paths tool for epiczorz quality cutting, which makes it way better than Photoshop Elements (a stripped-down, cheaper version of Photoshop) in my book.

Haha!
I can't use the Path tool. So I settled for the eraser on transparency settings.

Thank you! The lighting wasn't too much of a struggle in this piece, except I had to reconstruct some of the chest because the original stock horse had a really long carpet-mane that covered it completely!

I like the waves. Specially since she's a friesian and most have really long wavy manes. Very real that way.

adverbial-spectra In reply to Horsegirl1592 [2010-03-30 02:53:58 +0000 UTC]

I actually shortened the original stock horse's mane a little, it was like a giant carpet that covered the chest!

HorseRidingFreak [2010-03-29 22:32:01 +0000 UTC]

This is gorgeous! I really love the lighting, and you did a superb job with painting the mane this time. ^^ The only think I'd say to fix would be to make the end stands of the mane catch the light and become all "glowy" like they tend to do in lighting such as this. PaperClipy posted a nice example so yeah. x3

adverbial-spectra In reply to HorseRidingFreak [2010-03-29 22:37:56 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I might try that out, but I can't really envision how to achieve it without giving the impression that the hair has turned from black to blonde at the ends.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HorseRidingFreak In reply to adverbial-spectra [2010-03-29 22:44:44 +0000 UTC]

Hm. I tend to take a pale yellow and put the brush on low opacity, and also make it a little smaller than the brush I used for the rest of the hair, then gently streak yellow throughout the hair. Then go back and up the number of strands as you get nearer and nearer to the ends, so you get a nice kind of... blend/fade thing, for lack of a better word.
Honestly, I need to make a million and one tutorials so I can actually show people what I mean instead of bumbling around in circles lol. Hopefully that made a little bit of sense. ^^

PaperClipy [2010-03-29 22:18:16 +0000 UTC]

I love this! The mane is wonderful and I love where the horse is placed.
The only thing I would suggest is that usually when in the sun, the hairs will get more saturated and lighter as they stray away and you would be able to see a lot more fly away hairs. it's a little difficult to explain. here is an example:
[link]
you can see how the hair is very saturated on the ends. Also if you look at the plants on the right of your picture, at the tops you can see how the lighting affects the thin stems.
Otherwise, this is absolutely wonderful!

adverbial-spectra In reply to PaperClipy [2010-03-29 22:34:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I can see what you mean, but I wasn't too comfortable with making the ends of black hair really white.
