Description This is the famous giant waterlily in the Victorian Lily House at Kew. These huge leaves grow afresh every year. You can see a new leaf, not yet unfurled, just above the flower in the middle of the left hand edge of the photo. The architect Decimus Burton found inspiration in the structure of these leaves for the design of the Kew's even more famous Palm House.

You really would need a lily pond inside a greenhouse to recreate the Amazonian conditions under which this plant grows in nature. Kew has another tropical lily pond inside the Princess of Wales Conservatory, and an ordinary lily pond just beyond that in which they can only grow ordinary temerate climate waterlilies.
