The laurel forest – UNESCO World Natural Haritage. Madeira has been included since 1999. The island owes this distinction primarily to the laurel forest which covered practically the whole of the area between 700 and 1200 m up until the Portugese settlement (not quite 600 years ago) and also gave the ''forest island'' its name (Portugese madeira = wood). The term laurel forest is generally understood to mean a plant family of about 20 woody plants. Four different laurel plants provide the main representatives that give its name, The most widespread are the Azores laurel (Laurus azorica) and the Fetid laurel (Ocotea foetens) but there's also the canary laurel (Apollonias barbujana) and the Madeiran mahogony (Persea indica). The Laurisilva of Madeira is an outstanding relict of a previously widespread laurel forest type. It is the largest surviving area of laurel forest and is believed to be 90% primary forest. It contains a unique suite of plants and animals, including many endemic species such as the Madeiran long-toed pigeon.
