Okay so this is my first critique so it isn't perfect, but I really wanted to critique this piece and there's no better time to start than the present. So to start off, I was stunned when I stumbled across this piece. It's elegant, dark and I think overall it really works.
I liked the muscle definition of the horse, and I think the horse's body looks smooth.
The composition of the horse is nice, I like the way the focus falls on the water behind it, but I think the horse's hooves look a little awkward because of the rocks, perhaps it would of worked better on the left side. I like the eye and the horse's expression really works, the lighting is really good but I find the lake's brightness takes away from the horse a little bit. Again that's just a minor thing.
The hair is really good too! I especially like the forelock, personally I would of liked a little bit more mane but that is really just a personal preference.
All in all this piece is perfect, I like the way the BG matches the horse and there is a real mood to the piece. I think you pulled off a potentially really difficult concept and I can only find nit picky little things to criticize. Really, this is a masterpiece!

i definitely see what you mean with the grounding on the rocks, I wasn't too sure what to do about that. it was a bit tricky because of the horse's pose. I will see of I can do anything about that, but I will definitely tone down the brightness of the lake behind the horse, because you are right in saying that it is distracting. again, thank you so much again for your kind comments and for bringing those things to my attention. (;
