Today was a day that Hazelkit had thought a lot about.

It was a nice day. It was growing warm again; the chilly winds that had blown into the entrance of the nursery throughout her whole kithood were finally dissapating. It was refreshing to leave the den and not immediately shiver, and it was nice not to have to press so close to her mother to sleep at night because it was too cold to sleep anywhere else. Hazelkit had never known new-leaf, and so far, she liked it. She liked it much more than leaf-bare. But it wasn't enough to improve her mood.

The wind whistled through the reeds as Hazelkit stood with her siblings. They would be the first of the kits in the nursery to leave, though they were only a few days older than Rainfall's litter. They would be here soon. Foxkit was nearly jumping beside her--she knew already that her brother was excited about the ceremony. She expected Sparrowkit and Bravekit felt the same. She had been excited too, a while ago. Who wouldn't be? Being allowed to leave the den, making new friends, a mentor, learning to fight, the freedom to explore outside the camp--

Maybe it wasn't anything she was interested in anymore.

Boulderclaw was Boulderstar now. Hazelkit was too young to understand, but she knew her clanmates worried for Echostar and mourned her disappearance. While she understood mourning, she hadn't known Echostar well enough to be upset. She only knew Stonekit would be more excited now that his father had gone from deputy to leader, and she expected that his ranking in the nursery would change to match soon, too.

Leaf-frost would be a warrior again, probably. Hazelkit glanced towards her mother at the thought, but she looked away again quickly. She was too afraid to meet her gaze anymore. The two she-cats had both been very quiet and melancholy lately, and Hazelkit was well aware as to why. She couldn't keep her mind away from the memory, no matter how much she wanted to.

Boulderstar's words were ringing hollow in her ears, the breeze ruffled her fur and she remembered that she should have been paying more attention. She expected her name would be last to be called, since she was the youngest. She didn't mind that--her brothers should go first, anyway. She wasn't sure she was fit to leave the nursery yet. Would her mother still look at her every day once they lived in different quarters? The thought only made her more somber.

"Hazelkit," Boulderstar spoke, catching her attention as she realized it finally was her turn. Even if she didn't feel like her head was in it, she raised her head slightly, breathing out slowly. She knew she should look proud. This was a proud moment. "You have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Hazelpaw." Hazelpaw. It sounded strange to her ears--she expected it would feel strange on her tongue. "Your mentor will be Leaf. I hope Leaf will pass down all he knows on to you."

Hazelkit--Hazelpaw--could barely believe what Boulderstar had said, frozen where she was as she struggled to process it. Leaf? Leaf? Of all the cats in her clan, how could he have chosen Leaf as her mentor? She had been avoiding the tom, though it wasn't hard to avoid warriors who didn't have mates in the nursery, because no one really went in there otherwise. She didn't blame him in the least for what happened, but looking at him made her remember more vividly, like he brought back any small details she had forgotten. How deep the cut in her father's neck had been, the stench of his blood, the stinging pain in her sides, the sound of Greywing's last breath--

She made herself move, taking a shaky breath and stepping towards Leaf. She couldn't meet the black-and-white tom's eyes, but she did what she knew she was meant to do, craning her neck as best as she could to touch noses with him. It wasn't his fault, she reminded herself, it was yours.

The cats of RiverClan called out her name. They called out her brothers' names as well. Sparrowpaw, Foxpaw, Bravepaw, Hazelpaw, Sparrowpaw, Foxpaw, Bravepaw, Hazelpaw. She moved back to the comfort of her family, knowing now might be the last time they could all freely spend together. Her ceremony didn't feel how she thought it should have, but she told herself to be proud. All she could do was remember what her father had told her; the last thing he'd said. "Be my strong little warrior." She had to do that--and that meant she had to be an apprentice, too.

i decided to draw and write about it........ i really wanted to draw the four of them together but i dont know.. how apprentice ceremony-esque it really looks anymore lmao
she wont officially be an apprentice until the 22nd, but i wanted to get this finished before then just in case i lose my tablet pen again or somethinh else goes wrong
