Hello everyone! Here is a slightly darker, more meaningful piece of work I had worked on. So, a bit of background information to start with. My older sister has a friend from her university with schizophrenia, and I wished to try and understand how he felt and what he was experiencing through artwork - through creative means.
Schizophrenia is a mental illness that can result in a patient becoming delusional, experiencing hallucinations (i.e. seeing things that are not actually there or hearing voices) and becoming withdrawn from others as well as having a lack of motivation. A common misconception is that sufferers have a split personality or they have a tendency to become violent - this is not true. I had to do research before creating this piece, and many sufferers who do have hallucinations experience very dark voices that can be highly disturbing. These 'voices' written behind the character's head are just a few of the things people may hear. While many voices are dark, for some patients the voices are actually more innocuous. For this character, that isn't the case.
The voices that Schizophrenic people 'hear' are often heard by them in the voices of people that they know. On the right side of the image, it is blank, the voices are not heard by others, and the mental illness cannot be seen simply by looking at the character. The left side is filled with these 'voices', and they are at the 'back' of the character's mind.
I wanted to send a message across - although I'm not schizophrenic myself. It must be terrible for people out there who do have it.

The character is an original one who belongs to me. His name is Lucian Reed (this guy: ), and he suffers from Schizophrenia. He was also a textile student and he enjoys making things to distract himself.

Although this looks like it was drawn in pen, it was actually drawn digitally! I just went through enough effort so that I could get that particular effect using different brush types and brush sizes. The drawing style is similar to Tim Burton, Edward Gorey and also , whose art has inspired me most likely since I joined Deviantart (basically, a very long time XD ). Go check out DemiseMAN's works, they're amazing. He ACTUALLY does his drawings in pen. Now that's awesome.
