Holy cow! This is beautiful! My only problem with it is that his scar looks a littl displaced from his face. Perhaps in the future, you shouldn't outline it (such as add it in color on the computer without drawing it in ahead of time). But the lighting from beneith is wonderfully done, and I love the simple background. It gives the piece oa lot of ooph.

It looks great considering you say you're just experimenting. Is it Photoshop you're using?
A great way I find for colouring is (keeping you lineart on top, on multiply) And then set out your flat colours seperately, naming as you go. Lock the transparency on all of the layers, and then working from your light source, add in SHADOWS FIRST. This forces you to make bolder decisions, and push your colours more. Dont just lower the value of the base colour, usually shadow colours bear a bit of the complimentary of the light source, albeit grayed. A lot of people get stuck on doing loads of layers at this point, but stick to the one. That way, you wont be tied to your original flats and can change your mind for the better as you go.
I love how you handled the top of the head in this case, but for the hair and cloth dont be afraid to use hard brushes. The biggest difference between the REALLY COOL painters and the alright ones in my experience is what type of brushes they use. If you're worried about mixing, just paint a band on about 20 percent opacity and then sample it, that'll blend it fine. Blur tool is best used sparingly, from what I've heard (not saying I dont use it anyway ^.^)
GOD I'M GETTING PREACHY, I didnt mean to. I really like this picture, and its great to see some good avatar fanart. Its just I spent a LONG time trying to experiment in PS, and these were the things I learned both from my own work and studying how others did it. I may not be the best in the world, but it helped me in the past.
Sorry if this is offensive, your stuff is really great. Just hope this helps
:/
Oh yeah, love the hands, nice approach.
