The muddy ground was slick, and Prior couldn't seem to keep his footing. The dead priest's horse was tired, his painted coat was slick from the rain that Had finally stopped a moment ago. His new owner, a young wood elf named Sora,  sat atop him, pondering her poor excuse for a war horse.
She had just finished her business in Kvatch when she had revived a letter from Cloud Temple, asking her to return at once to the fortress. Prior had been jittery though since they had reached the forest. His large brown eyes scanning the woods, stress clear in his posture.
When Sora had stopped for the night the previous evening the gelding hadn't quit moving till the early morning hours. Sora had hoped that whatever had him on edge had wandered away by now.

A twig cracked in the brush to their right, making Sora notice for the first time just how quiet it really was.
No birds, no wind, no life.
Prior perked his ears toward the area the sound had come from, his nostrils flaring.
The world seemed to stop for a moment as they waited for something to happen. And it did in a heartbeat.

A troll burst from the bushes, a roar escaping from it's drooling jaws.
Prior spun around, his body already shaking. Sora heeled the horse, bracing herself for the bumpy gallop that was to come. Prior was not a steady horse, and he proved it at that moment. It was no wonder Jeoffry , her boss, had given her the old horse. Sora aimed the gelding for a fallen log hoping to shake  the blood thirsty troll. The smelly thing was close behind Prior and Sora, snapping at the horse's hindquarters.
Prior barely set himself up before hopping the fallen tree. Sora was proud of the horse for going for it, but sadly he wasn't as lucky on the other side.

Prior couldn't keep his footing when he touched down on the other side, causing the horse to stumble in his rickety gait.
Sora was catapulted over his neck and thrown into the mud.

Thunder clashed and rain started to fall again as Sora watched the old horse run off into the dark woods. She prayed to the nine that the horse would reach a stable safely.

A low growl stopped her mid prayer. The troll was crawling through the mud, water running off his straw like hair in fat droplets. It's lips were pulled back and it seemed to be searching for her.
Sora hid behind a large tree, her heart was racing as she reached for her katana.
When her fingers brushed the empty sheath her heart froze. Instantly she remembered the night before, how she had used her saddle to keep her head off of the ground while she had slept. She also remembered how she had hid her katana in the saddle bag to keep it close incase something attacked her, or a thief happened upon her in the woods.

Sora tried to slow her breathing while she thought about Prior running off through the woods with her only means of protection, feeling stupid for leaving her bow and quiver at Cloud Temple.
The troll's clawed hands slapped in the collecting rain and slimy mud. Shivers ran up Sora's spine, and the nimble elf tried to slip away through the trees.

The growling monster was close and Sora tried to move faster without making any noise without much luck.
Everything rustled as she brushed up against it. Glancing back she caught sight of the troll moving toward her, it's nasty mouth opening and green bile mixing with rain as it ran out of it's mouth.

Jumping into action, Sora sprinted as fast as she could through the blackness, jumping over rocks, dodging trees, doing anything to get away.
The nine must have favored her because she ended up stumbling upon a small farm in the middle of the woods.

She didn't take the time to notice the overgrown fields or the abandon state of the area. Sora rushed for the front door, slamming into it, and effectively opening it.
Panting heavily, she was about to call out for help, but stopped herself when she caught sight of dried blood on the floor.
Quickly shutting the door, she crouched down and edged her way into the dwelling.
The house was empty of life, but death hung in every nook.

To her horror, Sora found three dead people in the main room, the blood on their bodies dry and hard. She could only guess that they had been a family of imperials from the mangled remains.

Sora knew she had to find a weapon, the troll would be there any moment. She began her search for a weapon of some sort. The youngest body, presumably a young girl, clung to a book with her lifeless arms. Intrigued, Sora grabbed it before searching the rest of the house for something to fight with.

Much to her disappointment she only found a meat clever on the bottom floor.
Taking the utensil she ascended the stairs to look for something more useful.

The first bedroom held a torch and flint, 'useful enough' she thought before grabbing them and making her way toward the second door.
Her gut retched before she had a chance to open it up . Glancing down she saw the bare footed blood prints leading to the door. Listening to her senses she started her silent decent to the ground floor.

A roar sounded from outside, and before she had the chance to get to the bottom step the door was ripped of of it's hinges.
Sora gripped her clever as the troll barreled toward her, jaws gaping.

Making a split decision, Sora swung the clever, slamming it into the troll's neck. With a sickening crack the spinal chord snapped straight through and the creature fell, dead on impact.
Sora cast a suspicious glance at it and swung her weapon into the creature's head, making sure the job was finished.

Taking one last look around, Sora fled to the outside, her meat clever in hand.
If she had just turned around she would have seen the shadowy figure that would play a huge role later in her life.

A barn stood near the tree line, it's walls crumbling and doors rotting.
Sora thought a moment about leaving it alone, just walking away.
Slowly she approached the door. The rain had stopped, giving her a chance to light her newly acquired torch.
As the flame burst to life she pushed open the rickety door.
The deteriorating barn was basked in the warm glow.

Sora stepped in hopeful about finding a mace or maybe a short sword if she was lucky. She was only two steps in when a snort sounded in the dark area.
Taking a slow step forward she ran her hands along the wall, and found a loose set of boards that opened to a passage way, leading to the real back of the barn.
It was a smaller room, capturing the mellow light illuminating the hidden place. But the thing that caught her attention was the horse tethered to a fence. The steed was muscular with it's crested neck a rounded body and well planted feet. This was a well trained war horse, Sora could tell.
She approached the mare, Sora's nimble fingers reaching out and brushing along the mare's withers.
Her hair was silky and clean, which was surprising   for a horse that had been most likely been trapped in this hidden corner for at least a week.
Just by looking at her Sora could tell she was a Nordanner.

Stepping back Sora took in the rest of the barn, the nordy tugged at it's lead and watched Sora.  She nickered softly and Sora hushed her, all she needed was to be heard and attacked.
Figuring the dead people in the house would no longer miss her, Sora started to search for the horse's tack.
A blanket was strewn haphazardly in the corner, seemingly harmless.
Flipping it over, Sora jumped back when a huge spider scuttled out from under it, flashing it's long fangs.

As the spider moved toward the horse, the mare grew excited, pawing the ground. And once it got close enough the mare reared and brought her hooves down atop the poor creature with a sickening squelch.
The mare perked her ears, looking rather pleased with herself. Sora stared stunned as the mare flipped her short tail.

Shaking her head Sora turned back to her hidden treasure.
A beautifully engraved saddle and bridle laid there, shining innocently back at her. She ran her fingers over the name plate on the bridle.
Espin shined up at her in elegant carving. Looking back Sora smiled, " Are you Espin?"

The mare thrust her head up and down, her ears perked, and stance friendly. Sora picked up the heavy tack and lugged it over to Espin.
" Well Espin, how'd you feel about accompanying me on an adventure?"
Espin looked at her with big brown soulful eyes before nosing Sora's shoulder.
" I'll take that as a yes. "

Sora grinned and tacked up the muscular mare, taking her bridle, Sora lead Espin to the door where it took all of her strength to open the broken door.
Espin watched with interested eyes as the Wood Elf struggled.
Dirt drifted from the cracks when it finally screeched open.

Mounting up quickly, Sora glanced around once more, eyes skimming over the darkness missing the shadow again.
Clicking her tongue, Espin trotted off into the night.
Starting their adventure that would last the rest of their life.
