Description Riders are a diverse group of people that are scattered all across Terminus. They form special bonds with monsters through symbiotic bacteria which gives rider and monster a psychic link where they can sense each other's emotions. There have been multiple studies of monsters that had formed links to riders being more intelligent than their wild counterparts. These monsters are more sensitive and seem to show more social behaviors. Some scientists believe it could be because of the bacteria signals from the rider. The higher amount of neurons from the rider is encouraging more duplication inside of the monsters. This makes it better for communication between the rider and monster which makes it easier for the bacteria colonies to survive longer. Along with their emotions both of the pair can feel each other’s pain, for instance if one was seriously hurt the other can feel it as well. This can have severe reactions between each other and in some cases if one of them dies the other could experience severe mental damage afterwards.

Almost every single known monster and sapient species can form this link between each other. However there has been no reports of Phantoms forming this link with riders. Most riders prefer to form the link between their monsters when they are first born but there have been accounts of riders linking up with adult monsters in certain circumstances.

Riders are not one single group but are multiple different kinds of people spanning from multiple cultures and professions. There are tribes of riders that worship particular monsters in their lands. There are some riders that act as performers in circuses that can train monsters to perform amazing stunts. The most famous kinds of riders are the ones that work for the Hunters Guild. They protect people from wild monsters and are known as great heroes.

Riders are relatively newly discovered in the known world and are a new addition to the Hunters guild. It has been 50 years since they were officially considered part of the Hunters guild however there has been an increase in rider recruits in the past 20 years. Riders also change how the general population sees monsters. Monsters became less vilified and more sympathetic which made the common folk interested in how these creatures live their lives. That was when the Researchers Guild formed and more study became a priority over hunting. Knowledge spread and the act to protect monsters began.

Writer note: I always love stories that have a human teaming up with a wild beast to protect each other. In a world so natural and wild as Terminus, coming up with a way for this kind of plot point was a long and arduous task. At first it wasn’t all that complicated with just the tame monsters just being used to people. However I wasn’t happy about it so I decided to add another aspect to it with the bacteria. I think there could be multiple opportunities to expand this in the future.
These characters are important so stay tuned.
