Description Once again I was walking for miles around the country side in the middle of the night looking for something to photograph. I went to see the tree (Yggdrasil ) I photographed earlier and decided to have another shot I set the exposure to bulb for about 4 minutes to get some light out of the full moon and that's why the stars look kinda streaky. Also it was difficult to focus on the tree because of the lack of light. I saw practically nothing thru the viewfinder. There was a big barn on the left that blocked the moonlight from certain areas, but.... that's how I came up with the title. And that is a good song btw
Experimenting/practising with long exposures.
Ignore the graininess -- it was really dark out there

Hey
what I learnt from this pic:
if you wanna make a dark object (might be abstract) seen/or become clear to you
1-dare to walk alone in darkness
1-expose and reinforce light over it using an outer light source
3-wait in patience
right?
like the way of realization
and also the icon (do not take as a compliment)
i wanna make an icon analysis also not historically but intuitively lets say..
anyway like the whole story and the outcome

Thank you so much. Yeah those are the 3 important things to be taken into consideration when shooting at night. Also I carry a regular flashlight with me to illuminate objects I want to photograph so I can adjust the focus right before I take the picture (cause let's just face it, autofocus is useless in pitch-dark, as is manual focusing if there's absolutely nothing you can see in the viewfinder). Also you might want to purchase a remote releaser for some bulb exposures. My 350D has the max exposure for 30 seconds, which is like nothing if there's hardly any light available. Bulb allows you to exposure as long as you want, but you need to keep the releaser down with your finger during the exposure (which can be very numbing and usually result in shaken pictures). Thank you so much for your comment

I like that the tree's standing there all alone and with the stars in the background.

Your camera must be incredible to allow such a long shutter speed! Mine only lets me take 15 second pictures max. But I'm glad you posted this, who would have guessed that you could do this with photography. Lovely work.

What camera do you have? There could be a 'bulb' function if you scroll the shutter speed roll enough, although I'm not sure. Thank you for the comment

This reminds me a bit of one big oak tree near my uncle's place, pity I didn't get a chance to take a proper photo of it. But this kind of repays it, it's so wonderful. How cam it would feel, to sit under that tree and gaze at the stars, not thinking anything special. And I also love the stars! I wish I would understand something more about using my camera so I would come up with night shots other than just black. But enough of babbling, it's a wonderful photo and I like it a lot.

Thank you so much. The night was pretty warm and the sky was cloudless. I bumped into all kinds of animals during that trip, like bats, an owl and a fox. I should have exposed the picture a bit longer to capture the motion of the stars, but since I don't have a remote releaser I have to keep the release button pressed down, so something like 4 minutes is the max before my finger gets numb. If you have an slr you can take night shots with long exposures, just takes some practice that's all. Good luck with that if you decide to try it. Thanks for the great comment.

hoo that's lovely. It's really a treat to be able to be given the chance to see the countryside through your photos. Living in the city here makes it tough to come across sights like that and there's way too much pollution to see skies like that. That's awesome, really really amazing.

i've been doing a bit of experimenting in long exposures too. haven't gone up as far as 4 minutes but looking at the results you have maybe i should. everything seems fine here. the focus is as good as can be expected and there is very little shake considering that you had your finger on the button for what must have seemed like ages. top work!!

Thanks. Yeah I had to hold my finger on the button during the whole time and that's the main reason I won't do longer exposures atm. A friend of mine suggested me to get this [link] roductlist&A=details&Q=&sku=12935&is=REG&addedTroughType=search to ease these long exposure experiments. Thanks for the comment

Thanks.
Actually it was taken in the middle of the night. The sun had long gone down the horizon behind the tree and the only available light was the full moon. It was almost pitch dark cause the moon was pretty low, so I had to exposure the picture for minutes

Actually I think you managed to get away with quite a bit of sharpness considering it was such a long night exposure.. Especially with the foreground. I find grain/noise being the biggest disadvantage of using digital and then on top of that photographing at night!

I think you have done extroadinarily well... Oh and I love that starry night sky!

Great composition and colors, and the graininess remains some analogue film shots... This grain is very emotive, well done !

Uh-huh, this freaks me a bit out, because a few days ago I saw a dream where I was walking by some field and trying to photographing a tree, but it wouldn't focus because it was too dark. And it had just this kind of strange orange-ish lightning, as if it would've been sunset and night at the same time. Don't know how the light looked for you on the spot, but- okay, okay.

In that dream my camera broke and some guy came to me and asked for a payment because I photographed in a public area (wtf?). Sucked. But I'll quit now, don't kill me.

Your photographing trips sound like so much fun. I would never dare and go wandering outside at night, but I'm really glad you did. I had hard time believing this was taken at night first, because the light is so warm. But it couldn't be cloudy day since there are those deep shadows and not a sunset because- oh man. This is just confusing and so magical. And crap, that's not even grainy. YOU are grainy.

I don't know how you always manage to bring out these magnifying colours, but your pictures contain the most powerful shades and hues. They make your photography outstanding. And this case is not an exception.

It's crazy, does the sky move that much in four minutes?
