What cemetery was this in? Do you happen to remember the family name on it?

It was in a cemetary in Budapest, Hungary, and no, I don't remember the family name.

It's the one on Street Fiumei in Budapest, I don't know if it has a particular name or not.

This statue us called the Angel of Grief, it is a 1894 sculpture by William Wetmore Story which also serves as the grave stone of the artist and his wife at the Protestant Cemetery in Rome. There are many more replicas through out the World. There are 3 in the San Francisco Bay Area in California alone. Most notably is the one that is at the Stanford Mausoleum at Stanford University, which replaced the one created in 1901 that was destroyed after the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.

Little did you know that you were photographing a some what famous statue, eh? Not only are you learning about photography but also got a little bit of a history lesson too.

The Angel of Grief statue is one of my favorite statues that I visit often. [Grieve Not ] is from one of my favorite cemeteries where she resides.

After I took this photo, I saw photos of other replicas of it, so I knew this couldn't be the original one. Thanks for the history lesson.

i've seen this statue before, but i think it would be better in black and white, personally. i think most sculpture looks better in black and white, but here the contrast against the sky works. eh. idk. i would like to see the comparison, and an interesting angle choice. its an amazing sculpture, and deff. worth a fav.

AgiVega In reply to BluneBlue [2007-02-17 06:15:15 +0000 UTC]

I don't think it has a story. It's just a sculpture on a grave.

FalconFan [2007-02-10 22:03:32 +0000 UTC]

Oh, wow....talk about emotion simply pouring from the art... This is wonderful, and I have to agree with your choice of camera position: it's much more effective here, showing more of the posture and body position of the angel. And I agree with the comment above about the sculptor having an uncanny ability to capture the body language of despair...it simply floods from the statue, and also from your image here... Very sad, very beautiful.

wow, that sculpture was done by someone who know's their stuff.... captures the emotions of sadness and dispare perfectly... the angle where you took the photo also shows it well, keep it up!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AgiVega In reply to D-L-Tokunaga [2007-02-10 21:25:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. First my photo teacher suggested another angle that shows the angel's face, but I didn't like his/her face, and I thought that showing his/her hair only would be better. And perhaps this angle shows more of his/her pain. My mum too liked this angle better than the one that shows the angel's face.
