I like the fact that even though little is shown the impression is rather vast and deep.
the expression he carries is actually divided, just like you said, and his posture adds to that.
the painting is quite comprehensive and complex even though the technique is generally simple to the eye.
you can even say it contributes to the title that every stroke came "for each beat of his heart"
so, for me, I'd say this carries a lot of emotions.
