I've tried to experement with optical mix idea that Sasha Beliaev posted on cgtalk some time ago. Painted in PS with hard round brushes mainly and some texture touch-ups completed with Painter. I think with decent photo references he would appear more real... so consider that it's more improvisation than exact copy.Related content

The color/texture combo is amazing -- the image's bottom half looks virtually photographic, and the top half is a just a straight-up rockin' painting. Barbossa fangirl is pleased. Very much so.

Absolutely amazing, though I think it may be lacking the scar over his other eye! It's a very small, hardly noticeable detail, but it's there if you just look hard enough in the movies.
