Description International Workers' Day, also known as Labour Day or May Day, is a day to celebrate the achievements and struggles of workers and the labour movement around the world. It is observed on 1 May in many countries, or on the first Monday in May in some others.

The origin of this day can be traced back to the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago, where workers went on a general strike for the eight-hour workday and faced police violence and repression.

The workers' work conditions in 1886 were very harsh and unsafe. They had to work long hours, often 12 to 16 hours a day, with little or no breaks, rest days, or minimum wage. They faced many hazards, such as dangerous machinery, electrical equipment, toxic chemicals, and air pollution. Many workers suffered from injuries, illnesses, disabilities, and even death as a result of these conditions.

The workers also had little or no protection from their employers or the government. They had no rights to form unions, bargain collectively, or strike for better conditions. They were often exploited, abused, and fired at will by their bosses. They also faced discrimination and hostility from the public and the police, who saw them as radicals, troublemakers, or foreigners.

Many workers were also children, who had to work in the same conditions as adults. They often had to drop out of school and sacrifice their education and health for their families' survival. Some women also worked in factories, but they faced additional challenges, such as lower wages, sexual harassment, and lack of skills.

During the strike the situation escalated when an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb at the police as they tried to disperse the crowd. The bomb blast and the ensuing gunfire resulted in the deaths of seven police officers and at least four civilians; dozens of others were wounded.

Eight anarchists were arrested and convicted of conspiracy to commit the bombing, even though none of them had thrown it or were present at the scene. Four of them were hanged, one committed suicide, and three were pardoned by the governor in 1893.

The Haymarket affair is considered a significant event in American labor history, as it sparked international solidarity for workers' rights and inspired the creation of International Workers' Day on May 1.

The Second International, a socialist organization, declared 1 May as a day of international solidarity for workers in 1889.

Since then, International Workers' Day has been a time for workers to demand better working conditions, social justice, and peace. It has also been a time for celebrating the culture and traditions of the working class.
