Description Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin ( November 2, 1699 – December 6, 1779) was an 18th-century French painter. He is considered a master of still life, and is also noted for his genre paintings which depict kitchen maids, children, and domestic activities. Carefully balanced composition, soft diffusion of light, and granular impasto characterize his work.
Impasto is a technique used in painting, where paint is laid on an area of the surface thickly, usually thick enough that the brush or painting-knife strokes are visible. Paint can also be mixed right on the canvas. When dry, impasto provides texture; the paint appears to be coming out of the canvas.
Chardin worked very slowly and painted only slightly more than 200 pictures (about four a year)
This artwork of Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin is a portrayal of realism showing the real things around him. This was completed in 1731 and one of the chosen and favored paintings by King Louis XV. Unfortunately, this artwork has been lost during the French revolution.

It seems that each object reflects a specific scientific attribute as follows:
  • The books are symbols of knowledge;
  • The globe was a symbol of realistic perspective of the world, based on scientific observation and evidence;
  • The lunette reflects the ability of science to magnify things that would be otherwise hidden to the human eye.
  • The fumigator might be full of opium, symbolising the capacity of science to heal and to provide pleasure.
  • The maps refer to the ability of science to provide an important aid in exploring and charting unknown territories.
  • The carpets represent the ability of the technology to produce useful commodities
  • The vase suggests that Science and Art are linked through knowledge and craft.
