Description I finished it ! I just finished it about an hour ago... right after I finished a 54 min phone conversation with a friend . This is my first finished piece on the smooth A5 Bristol board pad that *moodymand gifted me with for christmas!

It's just an Arabian ...I must admit... but you know how I feel about Arab's... I hope you enjoy it! The scan is terrible, but many of you can or could at one time identify with me and know what I mean. It's oversharpened and stuff too. Never can get it right.

Size :: A5
Reference :: Arab (C) Bob Langrish
Materials :: 4H-8B drawing pencils, 0.5 mechanical pencil, kneaded eraser, standard eraser, tissue, cue-tip, blending tortillion, 115 lb Extra Smooth Bristol Board
(There is a WIP in my scraps if you'd like to see it)

i think the face needs to be flatter and straighter, and smudging lightly with your finger will soften the coat.

i love the mane and the highlights on the coat! you draw so well

Hmm... well I'd use cue-tips or blending tortillions to avoid oil on the paper butit is a little over sharpened...
Thanks for the critique!
Glad you like it!

cotton buds tend to give a soft look, like skin, but yeh funger smudging is a little messier

Late commenting on my part again… but I had to stop and say something because it would be unfair to pass such a nicely done drawing without paying any attention to it.
It's good to see a traditional piece from you for a change, and no matter if we look at your traditional or digital works, it's clear that you improbe all the time.

I tried to look at your drawing and the ref side by side and I actually think the body is more accurate than the head. You've just made the hind part slightly weaker looking than it is in the photo. The front is beautifully drawn, its muscle strength seems to match the ref really well.
There is nothing major wrong with the hind part but if you place the ref and your drawing right next to each other and scale them to the same size, you probably notice the difference of shape.

Viewing the ref and drawing side by side also reveals that the head is a bit too small like some people already said. You've drawn the facial details very well but there's still room for improvement in some proportions. I'm no expert of arabians but be careful with the shape of the forehead, it easily looks a bit weird if it isn't exactly right. I think you have probably placed the deepest point of the curve between the forehead and muzzle a bit too close to the muzzle while it should be a bit upper, closer to the eye (I'm not good at explaining this but I hope you get what I try to say. ).

Last but not least I must say I've seen you draw better eyes but I'll leave it to you to check it again and find out how you could make it better. Always pay attention to 1) the place and shape of the eye, 2) the expression you're after, and 3) how all little details around the eye affect that expression. This applies to all eyes no matter if it's equine or human or whatever creature.

All in all, I hope I didn't come across too harsh because in general this is a good drawing with nice shading and well executed fur texture/directions. Some people also said something negative about the neck but I don't see any major problems there. But when you offer me a ref and ask for critique, and I happen to be bored at work and have all the time in the world to think of something to say, this is what you get.

took long enough to reply right? i just never took the time to sit down, read and compare. sorry

yeah maybe the shape is a tad different in the hind quarters, I hadn't noticed that really before but I can see what you mean I do believe.

Oooooooooooohhhh, the dip in the nose too close to the muzzle, I see that, I didn't know exactly what was wrong with that.

lol. Ouch. The eyes, I was sick of this by the time I was finishing it up to be completely honest. I'll remember that when I'm working on my next one.

No no, that's fine, I wasn't sure exactly what was wrong with it but I could see some issues. I thought maybe I'd get a long critique from someone with the reference. Thanks for taking the time, I enjoy critique! I hope my reply wasn't too random and scattered.

Scanners are mostly a big paing ... my scanner always makes sure like 20% of the most important, itsy bitsy tiny, details get lost. I so hate it but who the hell can afford a professionally and well working scanner for like $400? I can't.
ANYHOW.
What I actually wanted to say is: wow. I've been watching you since ages and all I can say is you improve quickly, really quickly. You did a good job on the shading and background in this one. Look at me, I always try to avoid drawing backgrounds because most of the time they don't look like I had imagined or I completely screw them up.
I must say it's a big plus for you to see that you do backgrounds and are really good at it, too. A little piece of advice though - actually it's just a personal opinion, next time try to add a bit more contrast... you could have done the darkest part in your background even darker, the horse would stand out a lot more against the background
Otherwise, everything else which could be criticized has already been said.
Next time try to pay attention to those things and work on them. You will see your next drawing will be even nicer!

oh a last piece of advice. if you want to focus on basicaly arabians, make sure to study their anatomy! collect photos which show them from any possible angle, see videos or try to find a stud in your area and watch them. In time you will get an eye for the anatomy

Ahuvah In reply to Ponytail [2008-07-31 15:00:57 +0000 UTC]

Yep...the tiny details we so love putting in all go ' poof!' when things get scanned. Hah... $400 ? Oh come on we ALL that that to throw around

Awwww thank you Nadja! I thought my backgrounds were awful, but I suppose they can always get better...so maybe eventually they'll turn out how I want them to. I believe on paper the background is a teensy bit darker adn teh lines on the face and body are a tinsy bit lighter so maybe no so much sharp contrast on the body so it flows a little better...but the background could still be darker Do you have any suggestions about how to make a darkground black black ? I have found out that I can use all the patience I want and keep blending the black together but eventually I wear the paper away with tissues...besides lifting off half of the graphite I've just applied. In any event, what hardness of pencil do you use ? Or do you have any tricks on getting things really dark that you would share? You seem to be pretty good at getting things black.

Thank you so much Nadja! I'll keep looking at anatomy... this was a bit of a disappointment anatomy-wise but I can see what's wrong at least. lol. That's always a plus right?

54 minute phone convo ah!! the phone must've been as hot as an oven! hm, i'm lazy so i haven't read the previous comments but yeah, i think you already know what kind of throws the drawing off is that the head is just a bit too small--since this really looks 3-d, the size of his head kind of throws it off, but otherwise it is fantastic!! really love it!!

It's beautiful! The structure of the face is very nicely done. Great to see it finally finished.

As for critique, most of it's already been mentioned...
One little presentation thing...maybe run Auto-Levels? I tried it, and it doesn't seem to make this drawing lose too many details, and it just makes it look much more impressive in general.
I think what ~alhadiye was saying about the tail in the comment above could be done by showing shadows of clumps of hair being cast on other hairs and things like that... trying to put the same structure into the mane and tail in traditional drawings as you would in digital paintings.

Ahuvah In reply to south-wind [2008-07-25 18:18:50 +0000 UTC]

auto-levels ? hmm ... I could do that. I'll look into that perhaps...if I get my nerve up to open photoshop...I was up untill 11:30 ...and my comptuer doesn't run well after 9pm so it was almost going backwards instead of forwards.

you're right...and she's right. I totally... skimped out on the mane and tail.. it shows a bit badly I'm afraid.

I have some critique - as some people put before, the body seems a bit bigger than the head. But maybe that's just the angle at which the reference is taken from, sometimes the angle makes it look funny. Also the tail - I don't know because I'm pretty iffy at drawing them myself but there's something that makes it stand out more, like it's not "subtle"(?) enough. Maybe it's just me . Overall I'm glad to see some traditional from you, let alone art! Great job on this!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

I do think the tail and mane could use a bit of work gah. shading instead of lines hah

omg, i luv Arabs^^
well done, though i think the body could have been a bit finer and more defined, as it doesn't quite have the Araby feel. the head's pretty good, it's dry and dished enough to show the Arab, but the neck could be a tad longer and more "snake-like", as some ppl put it.

all in all, it's quite well done, good job!
