I've often felt that characters are best when they make the audience feel some personal connection to them in some way, thatthey're in some way relatable.
If, as you say, you've been in a similar situation as Finn and Flame Princess, then I think it's safe to say that these two have crossed the line from "good! characters to "great" ones.

I agree. I find it hard to believe that this is suppose to be a kids show since it often speaks more to older audiences. I believe all of the characters represent some sort of human trait or personality.

Care to elaborate which characters represent what to you?

Oh, sure. Wellβ¦
Finn: The selfless Lionheart. This is the person that puts their feelings and personal issues to the side to help others no matter what. This is the type of person that will give up their happiness to do the right thing. They will always wear a brave smile but they will never get what they truly desire.
Jake: The flexible best friend. Loyal to no end, which is why I think heβs a dog. This is the type of friend that is always by your side and can be what ever you need them to be at any given point in time. Whether you need something to lean on or cover your back, thatβs what this friend is for.
Marceline: The misunderstood adolescent. To me, Marceline was often shunned or feared by other characters because of her being a vampire. She was a assumed to be evil, the same way kids are shunned in school/society from being different. Deep down, they might be dealing with a lot of emotional issues and because there alone, they have no idea how to deal with it. When you finally can get this person to talk, they blow up over something like βwhy did you eat my fries?!β And while it might not make much sense to the other person, the eating of the fries is the breaking of the dam.
I can go on, but Iβll be writing forever xD
