Description
Eagle paced outside the entrance to his family's cave, anxiety written in every line of his body. From within, he could hear the sounds of his mother straining as she worked to deliver his new baby brother or sister. His father stood at the cave entrance, still as stone. If not for the bright whiteness of his markings, the dark stallion would have faded into the night, he moved so little. Eagle glanced at him, wondering how he could act so calm. Branson was naturally a very mellow stallion, but even he should be worried, that was his mate in there! Sure, the healer was with her, as her age put her in danger, but that didn't mean something couldn't go wrong!

Eagle stopped, trembling as he resisted the urge to kick something. He needed to calm down. Getting angry at his father wouldn't do him any good. All he could do was wait.

It seemed like forever before the sounds of labor from within finally ceased. Eagle, who had begun pacing within, froze as he turned towards the cave entrance, ears pricked. Was it over? Was his mother alright? Was the foal? Time seemed to stretch forever until his mother's typically light voice, wispy with exhaustion, drifted out, calling, "Branson."

Immediately Branson walked into the cave, the only sign of his own case of nerves revealed in the speed with which he suddenly moved.One moment he was still as a stone, the next he was vanishing into the cave. Eagle waited, quivering with nerves as he waited.

After what seemed like an eternity but was in actuality only about an hour, the healer emerged from the cave, nodding to him as she walked away, a smile on her face that Eagle assumed was meant to be reassuring. Seconds later, his mother called his name, summoning him inside.

The bay stallion resisted the urge to run, confining himself to a fast trot that slowed as he reached his parents' chamber of the shared cave. Almost cautiously he peeked around the edge of the cavern wall, ears pricked.

His mother was standing near the back wall, her normally lustrous white coat dark with sweat. His father stood behind her, grooming her gently. Shirona smiled tiredly at him, her amber eyes, a shade paler than his own, crinkling with amusement at his nervousness. "Come on in," she said softly. "Meet your new sister."

A sister. Eagle had a sister. His eyes flew to the pile of bedding near the center of the cave that he and his new friend Edward had gathered only a few days prior. A dark shape stirred in the center, woken by the voices around her. The tiny head turned to blink dark green eyes up at him. Eagle stared at her in wonder, approaching slowly, almost hesitantly. This was his sister. This tiny, dark little creature was his sister. He paused a few feet away from her as he looked over every inch of her perfect little form. Colorwise, she took after their father, a dark blue grullo with green eyes. She had a star in the center of her forehead like folded wings, and more wing markings on her ears. Four stripes began at the center of her chest, flowing out over her chest and forequarters all the way back to her hips, which were covered in a fine dusting of white dots. Each long leg had a triangular sock above impossibly tiny hooves. She looked so long and gangly, limbs tangled everywhere, but even so Eagle could tell that whereas he had his father's tall, rangy build, his sister was fine boned like their mother.

"Her name is Starjay," Branson said, his deep voice mellow and soothing as he draped his head lovingly over his mate's shoulders.

Starjay. It was a perfect name for her. "Hello, Starjay," he said, stepping forward to touch noses with her, taking in her scent. Her coat still had a touch of dampness to it, but it was drying fast. Eagle froze, eyes fixed on her newly dry face as the color showed through. Her muzzle and eyes were rimmed in a fine peach fuzz of grey.

Eagle felt his heart sink as he looked up at his parents, the knowledge of what this meant heavy on his shoulders. Shirona nodded, and he could tell she was trying to ignore the damning evidence before them, and what it would mean for Starjay's future. Eagle looked back down at the sleepy filly gazing up at him with innocence, ignorant of what her coat meant. Starjay was a grey, like their mother, and would one day be white as snow. Eagle grit his teeth. He couldn't care less what color she was, and he knew his parents didn't either, and would shower her with the same love and attention they'd given him. Not so much the rest of the herd. Her coat would brand her an outcast, ripe for the cruelty of others.

Eagle snorted softly. Not if he had anything to say about it. "Don't worry, Starjay," he whispered, nuzzling her little cheek, "no one will ever bother you. Big brother's here. I'll keep you safe."

So I've been waiting to bring in this little cutie for a while now! No, she's not going to be a full-fledged character, just an NPC. But Starjay's birth marks a big change in Eagle, something for him to actually care about and protect. Starjay's the catalyst for growth in Eagle that he would otherwise refuse, lazing about being his usual antisocial self.
