I want you to know that this horse is OK! He is not bleeding out of his eyes and nose. I didn't want to freak you out!

So what is going on here? This is a preview of my fun project-which is pretty much a bunch of drawings of nature spirits/animals that mimic the forms of trees and roots! What do you think?

This horse is part of a tree. And for the stuff coming out of his eyes and nose-that's tree sap. I'm working on some concept ideas/art for a story I'm working on, the one that has to do with this book: [link]

These characters are known as 'Sap Keepers'

I've always thought of sap taking the role of the life force in a forest. The time outdoors has done me good. In a way, this is therapy drawing for me. The sap is black because it is polluted, and this Spirit is filtering it through his body to make it pure again.

References...well I didn't have anything sitting next to me when I drew this, but I had gone horseback riding that day out in the country (I'm finally getting back to doing what I love!) I tried to combine the scenery and the movement of the horse-his mane is made of tree bark! Ears just didn't happen-I guess they've morphed back into his furious motion.

Thanks for the comments!

Mediums used: 2B, 3B pencils, blending stump on drawing paper.

More of these characters on the way!

Love the motion and the energy - I actually thought that if the spirit was bleeding, it would've been quite an interesting concept. Going from the title of "fury", I thought maybe it's blood symbolising anger and wounds as man kill off forests. But I guess your idea is more peaceful than mine lol!

My only criticism of this one is that the horse's cheek is way too round - looks too smooth. But otherwise, love the expression and spirit of the piece.

Thanks a lot! ^^ You really did pick up on what an underlying meaning behind this draw was, one I didn't really address, about wounds caused by man killing off the forest. Trees produce sap (or it shows on the bark) when the tree has been injured in some way, either by insects or disease or humans. So I guess you were right!

I love the movement, like there's some sort of wind blowing in his face. The filtering out the poisons is a really interesting idea too, I never thought of sap in a way like that before.

Seeing a horse depicted as a forest spirit is kinda interesting since I'm designing a brook horse/water spirit for my story lol.

Thanks so much! ^^

I'm going to keep working on the sap-I really like it dark-when I push the pencil full force onto the paper, you really get this intense feeling of 'this is an important part of the picture.'

Good luck with your brook horse/water spirit! ^^

Though you say this is no blood, I still see blood running from the horse. It's still the same representation of liberating blood you used on other drawings of yours... but isn't sap the nature's blood? It's the life in the plants' veins.
I can see the horse is ok and not bleeding to death though. I can see he is in the process of filtering something that is not good. I think fury is sometimes a good signal that some major alchemy is happening on the inside. I absolutely love his movement and the way his mane turns into tree barks, and also the designs on his forehead. I like that he apparently has no ears: like he won't listen. He will just do what he'll do. No one can stop his fury.
And as always... flawless lines and shading!

I am glad that you pointed out the ears-I was trying to figure out what it meant-not having them. But you made sense out of it! Sometimes it's hard to figure out what's going on in my pictures, so I like it when people can point things out for me. I think the emotions get in the way, and I loose the meaning for myself sometimes.

And I do feel like sap is nature's blood, but it isn't gory or thrown out there in a violent way, for me. I just didn't want people to think that's what was going on

Don't you love when the drawings have meanings for themselves that even we, the drawers, aren't aware of? I love when people point this kind of things in my drawings too!

Hahah, yes I do!
That is one of the best things ever!
There are a lot of hidden messages in art-I feel like the creator can be blind to them sometimes. It's always good when you can have a friend point unnoticed things out to ya!

Whoa! This is exalent! I can't draw horses like this! And it doesn't matter about the ears, this looks even greater without it!

Aikya In reply to firefoxessmoon [2008-10-28 15:52:22 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much!
I think the not having ears really adds to the movement-it makes his mood seem even more tense!

firefoxessmoon In reply to Aikya [2008-10-28 16:59:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. I mean, if he did have ears, what angle you put them at will os course be really important. We don't want him to look alarmed or anything of the such, do we?

DustyTears [2008-10-27 18:36:42 +0000 UTC]

When I first looked at it the first thought that came to my mind was "The poor horse. He's crying." But now that you said it is tree sap and that he is part of a tree I was like "Ohh I get it. At least he isn't sad." I love this pic. I really do. (that part was random I know but it is the truth. ^^)
