Description Pencils on Extra Smooth Bristol Board. A3. Year 2014.

Omg, I can't believe it is finished! I started this one in July 2013 and I have worked really hard on it. I wanted to make a drawing without using any blending tool but pencils and I did it! I just used a tissue and a q-tip for some specific areas, but that's all  I am really proud of myself  Anyway, I hope you like it as much as I enjoyed drawing it ^^

Beautiful drawing.  All the more impressive for being largely unblended.  I am sorry to admit that I rely on blending to cover up my lack of technique, although I usually add at least one layer of unblended, or very lightly blended, graphite as a finishing touch to prevent the shading looking flat.

AinhoaOrtez In reply to LateStarter63 [2014-06-24 09:31:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! The key is working with layers of graphite, starting with hard pencils and finishing with very black pencils in the darkest areas. It takes longer but the result is much cleaner and blending tools are needed just in some small areas

I think this drawing is really great and I'm glad to hear that you're not using blending tools too much! Blending could give a drawing a really messy quality and being able to make such gradual changes in shadow and light with just varying pressures is really skillful and also much more effective than just smudging things out.  good work!

AinhoaOrtez In reply to Foggylights [2014-05-27 19:26:09 +0000 UTC]

Thank you again! When I started blending about 15 years ago, yes, everything was a mess and it seemed dirty. Now, luckily, I have improved enough to be able to blend or erase without ruining the drawing, but my goal is to blend less everytime (in fact now I just blend, in general, about 50% of the drawing, but with this one 95% was unblended). I will keep on working to be able to draw something without any blending tool and finish it in less than 9 months, lol!

Ya know finger tips and bread crumbs work well too and sponges can give great texture if your looking to experiment with blending tools.  :3  Well done!

AinhoaOrtez In reply to Kirita-Windwalker [2014-05-08 22:13:11 +0000 UTC]

In fact, I don't like using fingertips to blend, since I find the piece looks dirty due to the oil of the skin. I use usually q-tips, tissues and brushes, but what I wanted was to make a drawing just blending with the pencils, without any other tool, but I wanted it to look as soft as my other drawings ^_^

Thank you so much for your comment!
