Description This tower was used in the film Pride and Prejudice (Ive been told), an amazing building but now unfortunately used as a mobile phone mast!

Looks like something the Romans might have built... but I suspect its a much later edifice -- the Gothic arched windows suggest something more like late Medieval.

I wonder if it might be what's called a "folly." I was reading on Wikipedia about whimsical structures that are built entirely as something to look at, but cannot serve any practical function. Often they are built as ruins. Typical examples would be Greek temples in garden, artifical grottos, and ruined Gothic castles. Inside there may be no separate chambers, not even floors...

The early 18th. century is about right for a folly.

Time for a reply.

I know of what seems to be a folly within walking distance of where I work in Brooklyn.
It looks like a tenement, BUT nobody has ever gone in, nobody has ever come out. The windows are sealed with shutters and a stairs lined with fluorescent tubes, goes down to railroad tracks. It was built as a façade to conceal ugly subway tracks near Jorelemon Street, where my mother used to live, before she met my father.
