"Working with Ajder was an acceptable first experience with commissions. His lineart skill is undeniable and he was very keen in satisfying my wishes in the final lineart. For the first sketch I gave him very rough indications and a sketch of my own. When he sent me the results I realized that sending him my own sketch was a pretty bad idea and I instead gave him a very thorough verbal description with many examples, as well as very specific
requirements for the drawing, for example: thicker talons, more bird-like feet, more surreal background (with link to a certain movie trailer included), elements to compose the scene, smooth line from the dragon's muzzle to the forehead (instead of a head with a protruding muzzle), etc.

The second sketch he made was an outstanding realization of my requirements, he certainly exceeded my expectations as I didn't think he was going to immediately capture all I wanted to see in a single scene, but he did. And after that it was all simple incremental improvements over the same scene.

I can say that the greatest downside of interacting with Ajder was his very negative attitude, but I think anyone who is reading this understand how he's feeling.

As for the coloring, I asked Ajder to do it with real media instead of digitally because I don't like the bland, textureless look of his digital painting (others may disagree). He performed to my expectations, with a very good looking graphite shading (I don't really miss the colors).

Regrettably, after all of these iterations some of the magic in the scene was lost. While very skilled at doing the lineart, and definitely very good at apturing what I expected of him given my descriptions, I think he didn't pay enough attention to certain key details. For example, the small dragon is a KEY part of the image, starting from the fact that the title references him (Black and White, white being the shiny dragon). If I had been him, I'd have paid much attention to getting the small dragon to look very detailed and beautiful even if he covers a proportionally small area of the entire scene, and to care his expression really conveys what it's meant to convey (he should look startled), because he is important. But Ajder didn't do that. Regardless, I'm not going to ask him to change the scene, as I promised him he'd have free reign over the shading and I would accept the final piece just as it was, without asking for changes.

After all, I feel I got my money's worth (or almost) with just the lineart, the shading being just icing and cherry on the cake (that's why I didn't want to annoy him anymore with changes, you should see how many itty bitty modifications I asked for before the lineart was ready).

There was another thing that annoyed me though, and it is that the rights the commissioner has over the piece of art he pays for. Ajder should be more clear in his commissions page (I've already told him so). For example, he should state if one has the right to publish a modified version (for xample, recolored) of the commissioned work, or the type of file one receives, etc. He doesn't seem familiar with image formats either, so that could be grounds for some friction later. Myself, I think I deserve a lossless high-res version of the image for my personal use, so I pestered him for one, and insisted it be .PNG, because it's lossless ; )

Overall an acceptable/good experience, with very few downsides related to the art, which was well executed and sometimes outstanding. The downsides being related to other details separate from the technique.

I would recommend others to commission this artist. "
