I drew this during the Atlin Arts and Music Festival, July 7-9 this year. I'm not done this one yet though...
Anyway I hope you like it

The use and variety of color is outstanding and the embellishments really bring something wonderful to the piece!

Thanks! I wish I would have finished some of these older ones, or at least had some sort of end goal. At this time in my life I was just interested in doodling and never really had an end piece envisioned.. Now when I look back I wish I could replicate some of these elements into my newer pieces, but of course, we all change

I guess when I start drawing, I rarely have an end goal. Even if I do, the picture always seems to tell me when it's done anyway. I remember having an art teacher in school who would ask why I did certain things - because they seemed to be outside the norm. I always just said it was how I wanted it. It's fun to do things that even wonderful art teachers don't expect.

I only took one art class in school and that was purely for easy credits. Art teachers always seemed to nitpick on my techniques, right down to the way I held my pen - I have always held the pen with both my index and middle fingers on top, pressed quite firmly on my thumb, with the pen against my ring finger, and under the top 3. I rest almost my entire hand along the length of my pinky. I use such a heavy pressure on both my hand, fingers and pen that I have to take breaks.. I use 300 or 400 lb bristol paper for my drawings. I have tried to relax my arm and hand while drawing but it just doesn't create the kind of effect I'm after. I have also tried the "right" way to hold a pen: index finger on top, with the pen between the thumb and finger.. Just doesn't work and I don't have total control. So, that being said, all my art classes were music and classic photography (hobbies I still am very involved in however!)
That one art class I did take was with a new teacher that I actually wished I would have talked with more. He taught us one very interesting technique that I use almost every single time I create something: Blurring your eyes. If you can blur your focus on command - some people can't - it lets you see the skeleton and shape of your art. I can't explain it really. For ink illustrations with heavy contrast like my art it has been one of the most vital tricks I do..
Another thing I do is put a drawing very far away and somewhere where I'm likely to look at it a lot, so I can see it from a distance. I have gotten to the point with my art where I want there to be something interesting to look at at all distances, from 10mm to 10 metres away!

I really only took two elective art classes. Everything else I had was mandatory - all through elementary and jr. high. The two I chose to take were both ceramics classes. I've never really been taught to draw and never had anyone tell me anything about my own personal technique. I think I was blessed that way. That must have been awful to have someone not simply appreciate the beauty you were creating but try to manipulate how you were doing it. Sometimes we have God-given ability that comes naturally. I'm not about messing with that. For instance, I have been running for 32 years (since I was 8) and a few months ago someone out on the street told me I was bringing my feet too high off the ground. Imagine - I've done 7 marathons, 10 half marathons, dozens of other road races and high school competitions. My body moves the way it does naturally. It's not gaudy or awkward. It just doesn't match with that person's idea of perfect running form. But, I got to the finish line just like everyone else...and did pretty well trying. 
I'm glad you had the chance to take a class with a teacher who inspired you with new techniques that you could mold and use for yourself. That's what a good teacher should be able to do! I would say that the works of yours I've seen are interesting to view from any distance!

That's very pretty. I really like the linework and patterns. Nice colors and fine style.
