Description Derek walked fast, trying get past from the neighbors yard as fast as possible with out looking like he was afraid. It was his deepest secret that no one knew.
The huge dog jumped up on the fence and barked loudly at Derek, making him jump and almost giving him a heart attack. The Saint Bernard growled, baring his deadly canines dripping with saliva.
The neighbors had just moved in a few days ago and Derek hadn't figured out a different way to walk to school without passing by their house and getting the crap scared out of him by their dog.
Derek was extremely Goth and took pride in being a loner and looking indifferent to everything. Everyone avoided him for the most part, but looked at him in awe. They respected his ability to seem like he didn't care.
That's why he now dreaded walking to school.
Since he now had to pass by the neighbor's dog everyday, he knew he wouldn't be able to keep his cool. He was so deathly afraid of dogs; ever since he was little he had been frightened by them but tried to mask his fear.
Derek froze with fear. He knew the dog couldn't get him, but he couldn't gain control of his body. All he could do was stare, terrified, at the canine.
"Blaze! Blaze! Come 'ere, boy!"
Derek managed to look up at the boy walking out of the house, one black backpack strap slung on his shoulder. The dog turned to its master, pushed off the fence, and ran to the boy. The boy smiled down at the dog and ruffled his ears before he disappeared into the house.
The boy caught Derek staring and asked, "Hey, you okay?"
Derek blushed as he realized he had been staring and nodded.
The boy ran over to the fence, his backpack bouncing against his back. When he got closer, Derek noticed his bangs were dyed bright red and his hair was spiked up in the back. He was thin and pale and he wore a black shirt with a loose red tie that matched his hair. His jeans were black and torn at the knees and a silver chain hung from his pocket.
"Hey, you live right next store, right? I'm Damon, by the way," the boy held out his hand over the fence and smiled.
Derek looked at the hand, his initial shock still plain on his face since he still hadn't slipped back into the mask of indifference yet. Slowly, he reached out and shook the Emo boy's hand and replied, "I'm Derek."
He was surprised at the way his neighbor dressed; nothing like how he dressed but so different from the way people at his old high school dressed, too. Derek had been constantly surrounded by jocks, nerds, and cheerleaders; but no one who had dressed completely in black. There had been no other Goths, it had just been Derek.
And now, he was being introduced to a new clique in just this one kid.
"Hello?" Damon said in a sing-songy voice.
Derek blinked, trying to regain his composure and slip into his mask. It seemed nearly impossible to do so in front of this kid. He wondered if it was because he knew the thing he feared the most was just inside the house. "Uh, yeah?" Derek said.
"Wanna walk to school together?" the Emo boy asked.
The Goth boy felt his eyes widen, he rarely ever talked to anyone let alone walk to school with them. "Why?"
Damon quirked a pierced eyebrow, "Because we're both going there? 'Why not?' would probably be the more appropriate question."
Derek figured he looked as bewildered as he felt; he wasn't used to be in a situation like this and wasn't sure how he was supposed to act. "Um, okay. Sure, yeah, we'll walk together."
Damon stood there for a second, his eyebrow still quirked up as he looked at Derek with an unreadable expression. Then he smiled and exited his yard through the gate.
They walked in silence for awhile; a silence that Derek felt was awkward but only to him. Damon was just smiling and looked care-free.
As soon as they had left the development and they were insight of the school; Damon grabbed Derek's hand as pulled him into an alley between two stores just across from the school.
"W-wha?!" Derek stammered as the Emo boy pressed him against the wall. Derek blushed and didn't bother fighting when Damon closed the distance between them and kissed him.
When the Emo boy pulled away, Derek asked, "What the hell was that?!"
His voice cracked and he blushed. He was glad no one else was around to see what he was like without his mask. Except for this guy, he thought.
Damon smiled, "You're cute when you're embarrassed. I just couldn't resist." He looked at Derek slyly, as if he knew something Derek didn't.
Derek couldn't look at him, couldn't look at those knowing eyes.
"Sorry about my dog, by the way. I'll keep him inside from now on."
The Goth boy clenched his fists, "Please don't tell anyone, okay? I don't want people to know."
Damon raised his pierced eyebrow at him again and looked at him questioningly. "What? That you're afraid of dogs? I'm sure you have your reasons," he prompted.
Derek sighed and looked at him, "I was attacked by a dog when I was younger. There was a lot of blood…"
The Emo boy looked at him sympathetically, "I'm sorry. I wont tell anyone, promise."
Derek smiled a little bit; something he rarely did anymore. "Thanks."
Damon smiled back and kissed him again. When he pulled back, Derek just looked at him. He wasn't sure what he was feeling; he knew he should've pushed him away, but he hadn't wanted to. All he could think about were those lips on his.
"I hope you'll keep smiling for me; that is, if I haven't scared you to the point that you wont acknowledge my existence," Damon said a bit sadly.
Derek smiled another small smile and put a hand on Damon's face. "It's fine by me," he said.
The Emo boy smiled again even wider than before. He leaned in for another kiss and Derek met him halfway. They stood in the dark alley pressed against each other until the bell ran across the street, signaling the beginning of first period.
The boys separated and walked to the school together.
Derek was overwhelmed by confused thoughts and emotions, but one thing was clear to him; he didn't want to be without Damon.
