Derek is pretty shy, despite how he looks and he has a secret fear of dogs since he was attacked by one when he was little. He is easily embarrassed so Damon likes to tease him. He tries to hide his fragility under a mask of indifference that hides his true self from everyone except Damon. He doesn't tend to smile a lot anymore, but Damon is slowly changing him.
