My favorite parts of this are his eyes and beard because you can see the most detail in both of them than any other part of the piece.  Though the laugh lines and contours of his cheeks being visible and defined is a nice touch!

That's a good guideline to follow.  I agree, the eyes are what can tell you the most about someone without knowing them.
