If you ask Mel, she tell you (or not) that she wishes for escape. From her going-nowhere life, from the inescapable city she is trapped in, from the demands and orders of others, from her regrets. But the author send her to psychology graduate, so now you may learn that there is very private desire behind it: a longing for finding peace. Mel seeks for place to stay, some stability of sorts, being able to take things at her own pace, and figure out what to do in life rather than have others make that decision for her.

I believe that each young human being seeks for own place in a world. However for Mel finding own identity is exceptionally tough. Although she identifies as woman, she lacks genitals. Moreover she has two mothers: one from whom ovum she is and the other, surrogate. – In my interpretation Mel finds inner peace the moment she decides to live in a city that she has been already living, she greets her neighbor in a street, and to appreciate people around her and as well actively form relationships with them (so next to her friends is sitting her boss).
