Here's what I've been thinking about the mysterious Sally.

I imagine that she's homeless... except it doesn't really count with her, because... she's free. I doubt she needs to sleep, or eat, or keep warm or keep cool or ANYTHING. She just does what she wants, where she wants, when she wants. Her home is Earth.

And that freedom doesn't just cover freedom to do and freedom to be, but also freedom FROM things. Remember when she got angry at Frances for 'making shit up' about her unusual state? I think she might have actually been angry at Frances for trying to enslave herself with an explanation. Sally prefers being free from science and doesn't want to be bound by any rules.

Just one question... do Sally's parts decay while they're attached to her? And where does she get new parts?

I really like this explanation. A lot. I'm not sure I'd accept it as fully canon, or whatever, but it's not far from how I think of Sally, myself.

Sally is indeed much more of a free spirit than almost any of the Grimfleurs, but part of the reason for that is that she's the only one that's clinically dead. She 'survived' being blown up by an IED years ago, but only a few bits of her original body made it, and the trauma caused her to have a complete 180-degree shift in personality. Since then, her original parts have been replaced, and so she's for all purposes, body and mind, a different person than PFC Selma Cooper-Martin, who was killed in action.
And Sally is fine with that. She's not only 'dead,' she's free, like you said.

As for her parts, they don't really decay much, but there is some wear and tear from regular use. Sally replaces her bits more often than she probably needs to. As for where she gets new ones, my standard theory is that she has a few buddies that work in morgues and crematoria, that owe her some favors. The legality is questionable, but I can't imagine that bothers her.

Another thing I've been wondering about the Grimfleurs universe: how common are people who defy the laws of science (let's call them 'metahumans' for convenience), and what is the general public opinion of them?

The Grimfleurs' universe is for all intents and purposes identical to our own - the Grims themselves live and operate out of Boston, Massachusetts, for instance - but 'metahumans' like them are not entirely unheard of. They are, of course, vanishingly rare; worldwide, there's probably barely enough to populate a small village, and it's not uncommon for people at large to be completely oblivious to their existence. (a couple thousand metahumans in a population of seven billion can easily go unnoticed.)

When people are made aware of their existence, their reaction varies, but generally is about what you'd expect - some mixture of revulsion and curiosity. Outright condemnation is rare, but not unheard of. Part of the Grims' M.O. is to raise some positive awareness of people like them.

It's tricky to draw the line at what constitutes this metahumanity. It's not like being a mutant in the X-Men universe. Haley, Sally, Isabel, Ella, and Amy live with clearly lethal injuries. Frances and Avril were born with their respective 'conditions.' Near as anyone can tell, Wendy's the victim of some literal flesh-eating virus. Sara's prosthetics are a whole big box of Weird. There's no real logic behind their conditions, and nobody has a good explanation for all of them. Heck, Anita, Barbara, and Goodie aren't 'meta' at all.

Actually, it seems that in-unvierse, the jury is eternally out in regards to Goodie. She may not be a 'meta', but... she's SOMETHING, alright. And we'll probably never know what, and she's made sure of that.

Metahumans are merely unusual beings, as far as anyone can tell. Vox/The Voice of Ashland is a force of nature. But the fact that they're clearly different gives them some level of definition.

Goodie... Goodie IS.
