was originally going to give her more a fae aesthetic but i figured buggo wings were probably too delicate to be Realistically Functional in a world of floating islands so opts for big wings instead...still tried to allude to the fair folk if only in name may add some things when its not 2:40 am tmr LMAO

Name: Anastasia Umbrius

Born to a higher echelon of Esdih society, Anya is chosen as a one of the handful of diplomatic delegates to represent Riotgnan in the exploration of the Alva star system. She enters the Intergalactic Federation armed with noble grace and noble education, determined to show the greater galaxy only the best of her people. With ever-bright curiosity and a bit more open-mindedness than some older members of her society, Anya is ready to learn all she can from potentially new friends - if only she were able to come out of her quiet shell long enough to make them!

Planet: Riotgnan an anagram of tir na nog

A modestly sized planet covered mostly by drinkable water, Riotgnan would appear an unlikely planet for winged creatures to not only survive, but thrive - but turn your head skyward and you will be met by the great underbelly of one of its enormous floating archipelagos. Held aloft by an electromagnetic energy the Esdih have taken to calling ‘maia’, these islands operate as an interconnected system - one is never too far from another, allowing the Esdih to become a tightly-knit species overall. Commonly strewn between major regions are smaller islands, usually uninhabited and rich with wildlife that have evolved to become as intelligent as the Esdih. Anya has made friends - or what she hopes is friends - with a large feline creature on one such small island.

The Esdih have made homes for themselves in the rock spires dotted all along these lush islands. The spires are ornately constructed and polished to gleam white. Directly beneath each of these floating islands is a dark chasm in which creatures that survive in darkness dwell, some of which have become truly monstrous. Most of Riotgnan's sea life is larger than is reasonably acceptable, and old tales of leviathans that have breached the surface to snatch up unsuspecting Esdih may not be fiction at all...

The Esdih are a proud race of winged beings that rule the skies. They are intelligent and knowledge-hungry, but have only recently warmed to the idea of receiving other peoples as they have had war waged upon them for their energy-rich resources. Though the War of Old is millenia-past, the Esdih had ruthlessly maintained their closed-door policy until centuries ago, a new council, anxious of what emerging technologies would mean for the survival of their people, created the new age of exploration.
In the years since the bloody War, the Esdih have combined aerial dance and combat to create a distinctive style of performance martial art. Though aerial dance has existed since the dawn of the Esdih, aerial combat - the destructive utilization of maia - found much of its history in the War of Old, when it was perfected to brutal efficiency. The combination was designed to re-purpose the most horrifying era of Esdih history into something new, and perhaps even something beautiful.
The Esdih are generally very protective of their cultural identities and are wary/completely repulsed by any attempts at dilution, whether that be the incorporation of other cultures into their own or worse. Modern Esdih are commonly more receptive to the idea, however, for the betterment of their people in the long-run.
Most Esdih are talented with spears, as “fishing” - wherein a group will dive towards the seas below and harpoon their marked prey - is an integral part of their survival and culture. They tend not to get too close to the water (for fear of monsters) and instead rely on a combination of keen eyesight, maia manipulation, and advanced weaponry to secure food.
Manipulation of maia happens one of two ways - propulsion or attraction. Exactly what it sounds, propulsion is the act of forcing something away from oneself whereas attraction is the act of bringing something towards oneself via manipulation of magnetic energy.
Esdihs are more immediately associated with their unusual third eye, which allows them a greater range of sight. Whether or not the fact that they are able to see - and therefore manipulate strands of - maia is attributed to this third eye is widely postulated, and the Esdih have kept this particular secret to their graves.
Many flocks of Esdih exist, each identified loosely by the general palettes of their plumage.
The Esdih are a fragile people with delicate bone structure, and no amount of modification will ever make them any less fundamentally noodle. Their diets are extremely specific, lending to sensitive stomachs that are able to palate very little in the form of new foods. Their immune systems are only robust in reference to their homeworld; on other planets, they must take extreme medical precautions in order to survive and gain immunity to new bacteria. Tl;dr they weak af.
Opinions of their own race range from the modest "we can fly and are pretty neat" (usually in younger generations) to the ever-present older mindset that "we are The Best and just breathing the same air as us is a privilege". Anya's uncle in particular champions the latter and thus was barred by his immediate family from coming on this expedition sucks to suck jeanbob.
