Here is a leather covering for the handle of a sword. It is carved with the same pattern that on the armor and the scabbard which can be seen here :- [link]

Does the shaped pattern hold over time?
I get the feel that a lot of heat, moist and friction should deform it after a while.

Don't know how long it will last. It was the first time that I made one. I will check over the month and years to see how it will hold.

Just an idea I got, Would it not be possible to pull the lacing ends beneath the lacing and let it lock itself, to avoid the loose ends?

No, because if you can do that, it means that you didn't tight it enough.
