I love Vultures. They are one of the very best sanitation workers provided by Mother Nature. What Mother Nature was unprepared for was the use of Diclofenac used to treat arthritis in cows in India. This medicine is certain death for the King Vultures and their numbers are reaching a dwindling number in epic proportions.
We are losing Eagles over here to lead poisoning. Hunters are leaving lead shot in gutpiles (a free lunch for Eagles and other birds which consume this carrion and all it takes is a piece of lead the size of a grain of rice to kill a once majestic Eagle. In Canada, we are loosing our Common Loon to lead sinkers. The thing is, is that there are other alternatives to lead shot (Bismuth, for example, as well, there are alternatives to lead sinkers. Now other birds of the shy face a new, deadly challenge...wind turbines. It is all very sad.
Kindest regards.
