Description A snoozing dragon basking on the warm beach sands, even as the sun descends to the skyline...

This is a DOODLE. (My first attempt at a dragon sand sculpture! ) Not my best work in the very least... (I'm a born and raised Floridian whose family actually loves the beach enough too go every once and a while, unlike a lot of Tampa-Floridians believe it or not, so I've had a lot of casual practice in sand castling[my signature stylized version of [link] is most notable] and sand sculpturing.) Good ones take several hours to perfect and then mess with until it's right. *Has high freaking standards*

Did you know? Sand sculpting can be serious business. It is an actual business, by the way. [link] [link] I've seen a massive, insanely detailed one commissioned for a college campus before. There was even a tv show about this kind of art....a competition where they literally blew up the losers' work! >} [link]

Sorry the area isn't cleaner, or more like sculpted dunes. (I tried the flash too since the sun had mostly disappeared but the detail got all whited out and it looked horrible ;-; )This was a quick 'doodle' in under an hour because we were leaving at sundown, thus why the anatomy is cartoonish and the anatomy not too messed with=fixed up(back legs and tail proportion and all of the neck and skull and the arm muscle definition//allocation*facepalm*). Realism and detail takes time, yanno.

Note: Yes, it does have wings. As anatomically correct as tightly folded ones, if too short(but lines can't trail off the tail end and shoulders so yeah...), represented by LINES can be. -.-' That was going to be the very last detail I'd make if I did have time to finish it. I couldn't just leave them out, so I kept my line markers which were to be the general guide of where I'd place them just so I wouldn't be without. o3o

Flaming RANT of tangency: Anatomically correct, as in, NOT SPYRO style*shudders massively in fear at the horribleness and popularity of it despite it being utter anatomical crap.* I'm dead serious. It is. My future career is paleontology, extinct species, and I know what I'm talking about...

Sis and I(with both sand sculptures, castle nestled in a mountainside/valley and my dragon respectively, under us): [link]

Clearwater is an area right by the expanse called Tampa(=home).

I almost always make something of that sort when I go to the beach. Lots of fun.

Useful search bar (and key words "dragon tutorial" pulls up every freaking thing you'd ever want) is useful. o3o

Oh! Quite nice, even if you did make it "cartoonish." I'd say it gives a bit of charm, in fact.

I've been trying to teach myself to draw, but everything I freaking do (including this) just turns out 'cartoonish-y'! I try my best to get accurate anatomy, since I'm a purist about that(and I HATEHATEHATE all those Spyro anatomy stealing annoyances out there *huffs* Spyro games have horrific anatomy, most majorly especially in literally every inch of the wings, but that's a rant for later...), but that's just how it ends up... TT.=.TT *cowers in emo corner forever*

Only the tail curves (not proportion) and back-to-neck slope are really detailed...
Proportions is something that happens when I spend a mass of extra hours tryng to get things right. I didn't have that at the time
Thank you tho~ ^.=.^

I've seen the tv show. But being a born beach-going Floridian, sand sculpting isn't a foreign thing... o3o

ut yes it can be 'serious business' [link]

Noryaw In reply to AkizuRyuuri [2010-09-08 19:05:54 +0000 UTC]

wow its just so amazing how they are so good with just sand and it dosent destroy itself do you actually get money for the work or is it just for fun? ^^ since i think ppl who does sand sculpture should get a little bit paid for the good work they do ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AkizuRyuuri In reply to Noryaw [2010-09-08 19:11:18 +0000 UTC]

Depends on if they're commissioned to do something somewhere. I've seen it happen at a college, and a festival. So yes, you can get paid~ :]

And no, it depends on the kind of sand from the area you have to use, and lots of water and 'compacting' it with your hands, and it stays together just fine! ^.=.^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Noryaw In reply to AkizuRyuuri [2010-09-08 19:14:17 +0000 UTC]

yea true with collage and festival but i mean like other things like "serious places"

im guessing with the sand is the most important thing and the water.. etc. man i should really learn this one day xD too bad im not actually living in a place with a beach :<
