Description The construction of these "Y6Bs" began in 1947. However, the N&WRR's "Mallets" were first being built as long ago as 1917. It concluded 35 years later in 1952 with the final "Y6B" being rolled outside of the old Roanoke Locomotive Works in 1952 for comparative tests with a pair of Diesel quartet convoys. However, the "Y6Bs" were all withdrawn by April 1960, making the Norfolk & Western the final US railroad to phaze out steam locomotion. One was sidelined due to a preservation bid order, but was sadly scrapped in 1976 after 16 years in outside service. Today, we've got one "Y6A" preserved, and she's 2156. Enjoy!

The Norfolk & Western was the last railroad to operate compound-articulated locomotives that used steam twice.
They lasted until early 1960 as other railroads moved on to cheap modern diesel locomotives.
Though some of the branch lines still operated steam for almost longer through the US-turmoil era with Vietnam and finally until the 1980's.
