Description On this day 52 years ago, the final Jubilee Ten Wheeler, London Midland Region "Jubilee" 45562 Alberta, was withdrawn from Leeds Holbeck motive power depot as the final member of a trio that had worked this line's many trains.  Tragically, Alberta was never sanctified, so she was scrapped at Cashmores scrapping yard of Great Bridge, England on May 31st, 1968.  Alberta's withdrawal on November 4th, 1967 also ended 45 years of 3-cylinder express passenger steam locomotion from when Great Northern, the pioneer GNR "A10" "Pacific," rolled out of the old Doncaster Locomotive Works for "running in" trials on April 11th, 1922 to November 4th, 1967 when Alberta fell from grace after a 33 year working career for BR and the LMSR.  Ironically, Alberta was one of the first Jubilee Ten Wheelers built, so she was one of the oldest Stanier-designed locomotives to be withdrawn.  So--at the time--ends 45 years of multi-cylinder steam locomotion in Great Britain, with over 15 classes from the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s (with the lone Caprotti valve gear clad Standard Eight Pacific, Duke of Gloucester himself), hauling over a billion miles between them spanning about 25 classes of the LNER, LMSR, and the British Southern Railroad.  Here, looking more like a scene on a British heritage railroad in the 21st century, Alberta stands "on shed" at location unknown, circa 1966.  The class also had a double chimney varient from 1940-1957, and the preserved 45596 Bahamas (who also soldiered on into 1967 at Leeds Holbeck roundhouse) from 1961.

RIP Alberta, August 8th, 1934-November 4th, 1967.  GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN.

Yeah.  It's such a shame she was never rescued.  I did see a picture online of either Kolapur, Galatea, or Leander disguised as 45562 in 1999 a few hours ago.  I'm aware Kolopur was also disguised as the prototype Jubilee, 45552 Silver Jubilee.
