50 years ago on May 1st, 1971, Amtrak was founded. I had a go at riding on the Empire Builder from Lacrosse Wisconsin to the Twin Cities on the metals of the old Milwaukee Road in 2019. I could only imagine what it must've been like to travel in the line's beaver tail observation car behind a Hud or an A Atlantic 85 years ago. They used the EMD E8s until the late 1970s, this one being fitted with a snowplow the previous decade.
