Description I did this for a challenge: fav.me/d8k9sy6 by Artistle

This was more like a speed painting rather than a long illustration, I was busy so I couldn't focus too much time on it. This was the first time I ever drew a wolf so it probably isn't all that good but I guess I need to keep practicing to get better. I struggled a lot with the fur, was hard to do with a generic brush, tried making a new brush myself, didn't work so I searched around for a fur brush pack, helped a lot. Still need to get a lot better at drawing animals, I focus mostly on humans.

EDIT: I redrew the wolf as I thought the original didn't have a good anatomy.

I especially like how you drew the eyes They really stand out, and the wolf looks even more dangerous.

I like the way you set the scene with this one. The black barren trees next to the white ground, really gives this a winter feel even before seeing hte snow falling. For me the blurring on the wolf looks good, it gives it that hazy looking through a blizzard feel that fits with the background. The trees however feel a little too sharp, not only should the snow obscure them but being further away should add a little blurring too.

As for the wolf you did a great job giving him a furry feel. I'm not sure if you feathered the edges or blurred them, but the effect looks great. I also think the patches of dark fur really work well, the markings make him feel more real, well for me but I have this thought that wolves aren't solid colored.

The wolf's posture looks great, that lowered head looks like he's just looked up from following a scent to see if his prey is near. Those way you have his eyes shining out from the dark patches around his eyes is fantastic, those are definitely a hunters cold calculating eyes.

The torso though doesn't feel quite right to me. The way the top is pointed between the shoulders makes him feel too narrow. The ditance from that peak to the bottom of his chest also feels a little too far. This might be a mistake on my part since I'm comparing him to my dog, rather than actual wolves.

Regardless, I think the wolf looks great and the winter scene is excellently depicted. Nice work!

I found your picture in Artistle

Thanks a lot! I see what you mean about the sharpness of the trees, it was my first time drawing both a wolf and a forest type scenery so I am not quite used to the blurring and blending of things in the background into the atmosphere, need to practice a lot more for that. The fur itself was a tremendously hard thing for me, it would be easier on pencil and paper which is what I used to do before moving onto photoshop, thanks to the change to digital I am not used to brushes at all, found it hard to make fur, tried many brushes, even tried making my own ones until I found out I could use my fur brushes with the smudge tool and then it started to look much better.

And I think you are right, a lot of wolves have a lot of greys, beiges, whites and sometimes hints of yellow (though no yellow hints for snow wolves I think) so I tried to add a color variation to his fur. I think the top part is aΒ  bit too high, I should have lowered it, ether that or maybe extend his head/neck further to make it look like its more of an angle but I'm new to wolf/dog/canine anatomy (I even redrew the wolf, originally it was not good at all in my opinion). One thing that annoys me a little is the snout is too short, I didn't notice until I uploaded it, feel like editing it out already but I am doing other projects so maybe after these I will come back to it and revise it and fix its errors.

Thanks a lot for having a look at my work and giving me critique! I always appreciate it when someone sits down and sees the errors of my work so I can improve from them! An outsider's eye is always better at spotting mistakes than the artist's I think. Thanks again!

my spirit animal is a wolf they're majestic creatures. i actually like the fur and the scene as a whole. looks as if it came out of an animated movie. i think there's a bit too much blur though but that's just me
amazing work

Yeah, it is kind of too blurry and I think the snout needs to be a bit longer, think I might edit it tomorrow. Thanks!

I've always liked wolves and I have to say this is really fantastic. I think despite your frustrations, especially with the fur, this came out in such a realistic and enchanting way. Well done.
