Description
The Zigong Salt History Museum in China's Sichuan province. The beautiful building with a fabulously ornate roof had once been a Buddhist temple before being converted to the Xiqin Guildhall in 1736, and was blessed with wonderfully ornate and colourfully painted wood carvings. The museum was only marginally more interesting than it sounds but could have been a lot better had the English explanations of the exhibits not been confined solely to the main headings of each small section, thereby giving no clue whatsoever regarding the exhibits themselves. Zigong had been known as Salt City for many centuries and was renowned all over China for its salt production, dating back to the days when salt traders were infinitely wealthier even than gold traders because of the vital nature of the commodity for the well-being of the people.
