Description In 1920, the return of Charles IV to his Hungarian throne had repercussions for the rest of Europe. Czechoslovakia and Romania had intensified their arms programs to build up their forces, while France and Britain continued to protest the coup in Budapest. Charles IV was looking to undo the Treaty of Trianon, eyeing Northern Transylvania. Soon, rumors began floating in early 1921 that Hungary was looking to take Austria and recreate the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but with the Austrians as juniors and the capital being Budapest instead of Vienna.

In response, Michael Hainisch, then President of the First Austrian Republic, had sent a request to Adolf Hitler, the Leader and Chancellor of the Third Reich, to incorporate Austria into Germany. It was a long and complicated process, with the French and British actively trying to prevent the union between Austria and Germany, though refraining completely from going to war with the memories of the First World War still being fresh in the minds of Europe. With the backing of the people behind them, and knowing that France and Britain would do little to nothing, Der Fuhrer accepted the offer and on August 12, 1924, the Wehrmacht marched into Austria, with Der Fuhrer proclaiming Austria's incorporation into the Third Reich.

This event had compounded the ineffective League of Nations, as Fascist Italy supported the Anschluss, (Though it was reported that Benito Mussolini was outraged privately at the Anschluss) the only nation opposing harshly was Hungary, as Charles IV stated that he never technically abdicated his Austrian Claims. Aside from Hungary, the rest of Europe just watched on with some curiosity, worry, and apprehension. However, those feelings were replaced with despair after the Great Depression. Germany managed to handle it due to expanded works, while also secretly rearming the nation, with the introduction of the Luftwaffe in 1933.

The union between Germany and Austria lasted from 1924 to 1945, with the end of the war seeing the union ending. Austria would suffer the fate of Germany, being divided into five zones, though it ended up reuniting as the Second Austrian Republic on the model of Switzerland.
