Description My original character, Kamiko done in the style of two colors (high-contrast)! If I were to continue doing a comic with her (which would be time consuming) it would only be in two colors, hence my continued at attempts at practicing the form.

I vectorized this image in Inkscape. I'm still thinking of giving it a background, but I'm not sure what that would be yet. As far as I'm concerned though it's done.

Love all that poof! ^^

Me too! I finally posted that picture to my graphic novel site ( www.mortalcoilcomic.com) in the artwork section. I was going to put a blog post up with some behind the scenes details for how I made it in Inkscape along with the original sketch for her, and you'll definitely find more poofy dresses in the comic itself.

Ah, so wait, is this the "One of Us" comic, or has it yet to be posted online?

"One of Us" is posted on This Mortal Coil's site and dA. It's only those 7 pages and was a small thing I did a while back. Its somewhat canon. The Rabbit and the Moon is where things begin.

The use of negative and positive space on this is incredible, the character is very good, the motion and expression are spot on, I think you have a winner here.
Great work.

Thank you! I really like the interplay of light and black especially with the dress folds. It turned out really well.

Cute! I love the super high contrast on this. It's always a style I enjoy, but I can never seem to do it right! This piece is great, she's got such a concerned expression!

Thanks. It's a style I've been learning how to do, because I want to try and draw an entire graphic novel in high contrast with this character. You should check out some of my comic pages I have on dA. They're pretty crappy but with every page and illustration I started to get better at it.

Nice! I checked out some of the pages and it was fun seeing your progression as you got more comfortable with the style. Great work with it! I really need to start practicing, you've inspired me.

So much awesome high-contrast here. If you did the comic, what would the colors be? Black and white or some other combination? I think there's some awesome stuff done in alternates. (You could also think of spot color.)

AlbinoGrimby In reply to lucydarkwood [2012-01-19 04:34:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. The original comic that I did draw is all in black and white. It might be interesting to experiment with different two-color combinations to change the mood -- I think the black and white evokes a gritty, noir-ish type of look a la Sin City. I recently did a piece with Kamiko that was tinted differently. The link: [link] and I liked that a lot. I want to try other two color combinations and see how they look and feel as well. Another thing I was toying with was adding a third color (like Schindler's List) that might be used to represent something symbolic if/when the need arises.

I think you should consider the third color, but then I am always an unabashed fan of spot-color. Especially if you've got the clean lines and high contrast that will make it really stand out. Sin City did that in several volumes, if you recall.

Yeah I remember Sin City did the spot color too. I'll just have to find the opportunity to use it.

Hey BroccoliTree, for this image I used a program called Inkscape. It's like Illustrator except open-source. It's actually not to bad to use for doing vector drawings. You can search Google for it. I'm glad you like the image.
