Alright, well, i've been wanting to touch on this subject for a while now but never really got around to it.This is what Toothless really looks like, no, i'm not kidding if you don't believe me go look it up. I read the book a loooonnnngg time ago, 6 years ago when I was about 10. It's funny cause I remember constantly thinking "omg this would be so cool as a movie!," and 5 years later they did. But it was NOTHING LIKE the actual books, the only thing similar were the names. And apparently i'm the only one on this planet who has read these books because NO ONE has read them, I feel like i'm taking crazy pills!! *cough** Anywho, from what I recall Toothless is a midget dragon called an "Average Brown" NOT a "Nightfury," and he's an annoying litte shit. He would always bitch and whine about things, and yes, he did talk. He was also legitally toothless. And the whole point of the Vikings of Berk was to tame dragons in the first place! I mean, I hear they're making another movie so maybe it actually will follow this one and the first movie took place before this book, but the thing is, all the same names as the book was used in the movie sooooo. The only reason I have hope for this is because in the movie they just call him "Hiccup" when in the book his full name is "Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III"
But don't get me wrong, I still LOVE the Dreamworks movie

I read the books, and I prefer them. I really like the book version of toothless, much better than the movie version.

I actually like both of them(Haven't read the books yet but they look quite adorable and charming!). Yes the movie Toothless actually doesn't have the cheesy green-dragon-with-the-red-wing-membrane kind of design and is completely a bada** but I like the book one aswell even though he can sometimes be a pain in the neck. But he looks like he's actually sweet in the inside just doesn't want to show it(please correct me if i'm wrong)

I have such mixed feelings about the movies, because, on their own, they are legitimately good movies. BUT my brain immediately compares them to the books, and then I just hate them. I mean, I want to like the movies, and I really want to see them as their own story, but my mind just jumps straight to the books...

I love the movie character designs better than the books.
It's a nice break from the cheesey dragon design that's pretty much overused over the years. (Like an example being the tv show "Jane and the Dragon".)

I think they mean LITERALLY, he just had no teeth. In the movies Toothless has retractable teeth, in the books Hiccup was made fun of when he stole Toothless because the dragon was abnormally small and literally just DIDN'T have ANY teeth, no retractables, nothing. He did actually get a tooth at some point, but upon biting one of the dragons he lost it again.

I actually watched the movie before I read the book. Then I read the books (I own all except the last one, purely because it's not in stores yet), and decided NEVER to watch HTTYD2. Seriously, screw the movies.

I had also read a few of the books and watched almost everything HTTYD related and the books and the movies are not even in the same universe (where the heck did the Romans go? And dragons dont have a language in this universe). Instead of saying the Books and movies are one and the same, think that the movies are just heavily inspired by the books. I greatly recommend you watch the second movie with that mindset and you will be amazed by the animation and the just as well made soundtrack.

Actually, the Toothless from the books was THOUGHT to be an Average Common or Garden dragon, but it turned out that he is really a VERY young... Well, I'm not gonna tell you, but when he's fell grown, he'll be HUGE :3

I feel exactly the same! A movie based exactly off of the books would have been incredibly cool, but DreamWorks obviously just didn't want it to happen. Still, the movie is great anyway, so no complaints about that.

I feel the same way. They didn't even put Hiccup's mother in the movie which got me kind of upset about the whole thing, not to mention the different clans, the rider dragons, the TWO sea dragons, and tooTHLESS WAS A SMALL GREEN DRAGON WHO COULD KIND OF TALK NOT SOME FELINE BLACK DRAGON

Love the books best series ever and yes the movie is good but..... I like to think its not even related to the books! I wish they had at least kept some of the deigns and know theres a Tv series good show but I was hoping they would improve it I litt- a lot and I think the thing that ticked me off the most was... THE NEW TOOTHLESS!!! Dont get me wrong I kinda like his movie form but I really wish we was at least a little whiny or something like the real toothless. and alvin oooh the new alvin killed me when I first saw him I was hoping that was not him then.... They said his name man who knew people had the nerve to even consider changing a great book with an awesome plot that much ok anyway I like the way you draw toothless added to faves

I liked both Toothless. But I don't consider the movie/series and books the Same, like most people do. They're to differant to compare. And to be honest, I don't think little Toothless and Sly, skinny Alvin would fit in the movie/series, Just like Night Fury-Toothless and and muscalur Alvin don't fit in the books. All four of them are realy good. But to be honest, I liked the movie/series better than the books (books are still awesome though) wich is kinda weird, since I read the books first...

I always refer to movie!Toothless as "Fake Toothless", for this reason...I also call him Fake Fishlegs.
The only dragon species name that matched up in the book and movie/cartoon, would be Snotlout's dragon in the cartoon. Except the name and gender of the creature are different...

I know the feeling! The book is amazing, and even though I like the movie, I prefer the book. Did you know, though, that there's actually a series based off the book? (How to Be a Pirate, How to Speak Dragonese, etc.) In fact, in the tenth book, there's some backstory about Hiccup's Ancestor, Hiccup the First, which is almost EXACTLY like the movie!

I saw the books on sale waaay before the movie and thought "Meh, maybe later". Then the movie came out and the books were sold out lol. But anyway, I see the movies and books parallel universes and cannot wait to get all the books on Kindle
