Thanks, P, the lyric means a wife heard an owl calling thrice in the middle of the night, then a soldier told her that her husband was dead in the war, and she feels like half of her soul is dying with him hearing that news.

nahs it's just a common story back in the war, wives lost their husband, moms lost their child, etc. the writer just made it more poetic
